I mostly just see older posts boosted into my timeline. Sometimes I browse hashtags, but being on a single user instance, this typically requires third party tools, or going to mastodon.social to be useful.

Someone comes to my attention either by following me or boosting/liking something of mine, or maybe I just see one of their posts and I’m curious. Then I look at their profile, and if I see something interesting I may boost it. Especially if it’s a pinned post, or if they don’t post that often so scrolling a short way goes back a long time, it might be something from a while ago.@stefan@stefanbohacek.online

I stopped for a while when it was discovered that on Mastodon, when an account moves, they're removed from any lists you added them to. (That should be fixed now.)

That’s my main discovery tool. I had hundreds of it on Twitter.
Seems about right. I wish I added "Lists" as an option, that might account for a big chunk of "Something else", I'd imagine.
