I think it turned into some amount of shit slinging that stopped being relevant to the shit at hand. I'm guessing mods decided to close that sphincter before the verbal diarrhea overflowed the rim of the post ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
They were simply asking a question? Why do you assume the nurse is a lady? Tbh I probably would’ve also assumed they were female, but by asking the question, you’re forced to think about the assumptions you make. Which may not be accurate.
You’re literally getting offended over someone asking a question lmao. And of course you’re the one saying everyone else is getting offended. Do you literally just not understand what irony is? Or are you literally incapable of looking inward for 2 seconds, and realizing that perhaps you make assumptions about people and situations that may be incorrect?
I don't assume they're a lady at all, in fact I don't give a shit about their gender? Same as the person who was originally corrected.
Unlike you lot, who are incredibly arrogant in thinking that caring about a random individual who will supposedly like being "defended" or even needed that in the first place. That arrogance is so self-serving it's nauseating.
I was speaking in generalizations, not about your specific assumptions.
We all make assumptions about others that are sometimes incorrect. Myself included.
In fact, you’re currently crafting up straw men to attack right this very second. And those straw men are based on incorrect assumptions about what I (or “we”, whoever this mysterious “we” is that you reference) think.
For example, you reference that I am “caring about a random individual who will supposedly like being "defended" “. You are putting quite a few words into my mouth. All I’ve ever done was point out your getting offended by someone asking a question.
I don’t see the harm in pointing out those assumptions. Those who challenge our assumptions make us better people. It helps us grow and learn to disassociate from social media brain rot that gets us pissed off at each other for no reason.
You see someone talking about “gender” and, I assume (although I could certainly be incorrect in my assumption!) that you immediately craft an individual in your mind who has all these other views that you despise. I admittedly do this too. I think we all do to a certain extent.
If someone tells me their stance on abortion for example, I subconsciously craft this individual in my mind and create assumptions about what that other person thinks based on zero rational evidence. I’m trying to get better at realizing when I do this, but in order to get better, my assumptions sometimes need to be pointed out for me.
Wouldn’t you want others to point this out to you?
The whole getting offended on someone's behalf who isn't even part of the conversation, and when the "offense" wasn't meant as such is inflammatory bullshit. And you all know it.
You do understand that the person being defended isn't in the picture, doesn't know or care about it, and therefore that this is just selfish white-knighting, right?
"Literally" not, I'm arguing for people to stop giving a shit about gender, especially about people who aren't and won't be a part of the discussion. It's asinine and vapid self-serving slop to "defend" someone who for all you know is a huge bigot? Like come on, you don't even know the person, why white-knight...
Not on someone's behalf, but at someone who is defending a person they don't even know needs defending. Like, what the fuck do you think you gain by "correcting" pronouns for a John Smith?
It's all about the personal gain, none of it is altruistic. It's egocentric mania.
I guess you could argue whether it was important to bring it up here, but you didn't say that in your original comment. Your original comment was extending the idea that gender doesn't matter to assert that proper pronouns aren't needed in discussions. These are two separate (although sort of joined) ideas
"Gender doesn't matter" means that people should be able to do whatever regardless of their gender. They shouldn't face discrimination if they're male, female, trans, etc. It does not mean gender is not important in conversation as it certainly is to show that you respect someone. People won't get mad if you use "they" to refer to them (or, if they do, they're just an ass) but many people do get mad if you assume "he" or "she" because they'll take it as a sign that you disrespect them or think they're lesser because of their gender.
Also, the tone of your first comments makes you sound like, for lack of a better word, an asshole. Don't be surprised when people down vote when you go after someone like that
Yeah..I think people also subconsciously craft a persona of the other based on only one data point, and once they have their subconscious creation of the person from the “other” team, they ignore everything else that was written.
I’ve also been trying to reason with them and they also won’t read what I wrote. Or, like you said, it’s possible I wasn’t clear enough, which is certainly possible.
Your first definition of gender not mattering is exactly right, and if the person doesn't show up to correct the use of pronouns then who cares.
There is no "honour" to defend for a random unknown individual. It's just for self validation or so that people who do such things feel like they belong to the "tribe" or whatever. Tribalism is the stupidest reason to use pronouns.
Did you even read my comment? I was saying that you said nothing about that second point in your original comment and that's why people are going after you. Asking if pointing out people misgendering by accident is necessary is one question. Stating that pronouns don't matter in an agressive matter is another
That's just post-hoc rationalisation. You really just wanted to jump on the bandwagon. None of this whole thing is altruistic and the level of arrogant high horsing going around makes my blood boil.
If it was in person, absolutely defend the pronouns of whoever, but on the internet? It's just for karma or whatever high people chase.
