McCoy hating everything about space travel in TMP made no sense. He was not like that at all in TOS. Sure, he was cranky and he didn't get along with Spock, but he was regularly very much into the mission. He also had no issue with transporters.

It's one of the things about TMP that really bugged me.
- He was angry because he thought he had retired.
  
  (The fact that Starfleet can force someone back into service is a little bit creepy.)
  
  Yeah, but where did the transporter hate come from?
  
  And he continued bitching about the job after he was clearly free to retire from it again.
