Have you ever worked a job that you felt was morally wrong? What was the job and what was it like?
I'm watching Telemarketers and it's reminding me of shady jobs I've had in the past.
I worked for Rent-a-Center doing collections. It's a place that preys on the poorest people in America, getting them to pay extortionate interest on rent to own furniture, appliances and electronics. We had customers who would end up paying thousands of dollars on a couch that wasn't even new when they got it. Even worse was people who would hit hard times and get their stuff repoed and end up with nothing to show for thousands of dollars in payments.
My job was to learn when these customers got paid, or when they got their disability or welfare check and hound them over the phone or in person. If they didn't pay, I'd be sent out to knock on their doors. If that failed I'd be sent to repo it.
It was a soul crushing job. I've had shit jobs, but I'd never had a job that made me feel like I was doing harm to people before. Some of my coworkers would deal with this by demonizing the customers, acting like they were all deadbeats who deserved to get fleeced. Others would blame the customers, saying shit like, 'Anyone stupid enough to buy here was going to get ripped off by someone, and it might as well be us'.
I couldn't do that, so I started getting fucked up at work like Pat Pespis. I started pretending to do my job, dialing the number and then hitting the flash button and faking the calls. I'd get sent on a repo and my coworker and I would go out to eat or to the mall and pretend they wouldn't answer the door. I expected my collection stats would fall low enough that I'd eventually be fired, but they barely moved at all. It turned out that hounding people to pay a bill wasn't actually doing much.
Worked in Human Resources… I don’t need to say more but I will.
Most of my other HR coworkers convinced themselves that they were there to help people, but the truth is that it was our job to manipulate people into doing what was best for the company.
One time we had a management position in the upper midwest of the US we needed to fill internally. I called maybe 20 candidates and eventually found the person who I would eventually convince to pack up their life and move to the middle of nowhere.
After that, I didn’t want to do the job anymore.
That was just one story of many that includes things like covering up racism or sexism from managers against employees. HR is a cesspool and so was that company. I regret it.

I’ll be honest I’ve never understood this part. HR is there to protect the company, right? What protects the company better than firing (and prosecuting if necessary) sex pests and racists?
You have to hire new management which is a cost that you'd rather not deal with.
Of course, in the long run you get punitive and stamp it out of your organization completely, but that would require foresight and leadership, not rewarded under the capitalist system.
A new floor manager is no more expensive to hire than a basic “actually does the job the company exists for” employee, and replacing the manager will prevent multiple replacements of basic employees.
I totally get why higher level people don’t have shit happen, but I’m surprised HR would see low level managers as any different from the people they manage.
There's been a bunch of turnover with management. We have this absolute piece of shit person in a position of power that he should NOT be in. He has been reported for sexual harassment, racism, sexism, egregious, disgusting comments about clients and staff....but of course nothing happens to him. My two work friends, for WHATEVER reason, were talking to this asshole about something or other about sexual harassment. The asshole turns to one friend who already felt super uncomfortable with him, and says something to the effect of "Oh, well for example, lets say I'm person A, and person A makes grabbing motions like this towards ratboy's friend, that's sexual harassment!" AND HE LITERALLY MADE SQUEEZING MOTIONS TOWARDS HER. She then complained to our HR consultant, and he told her that it was just "friendly banter". I hate this place lol
