This and Moana 2 breaking box-office records is insane to me. I had no idea people liked Moana that much, I expected it to be another well-liked but sort of forgettable animated flick like Coco.
I haven't seen Moana 2, but the first one has got a lot of kid appeal, and I found the music to be more appealing and fresh than other big animated productions.
If you've ever had a kid fixated on a show with an absolutely grating soundtrack or character voices, you'll appreciate and encourage any interest they show in something with nice music.
Moana 2 success seems weird to me too. The character is probably popular among children

As a double-whammy, Coco was the highest grossing movie in Mexico of all time when it came out.
It was toddler crack. I was not allowed to say "Moana" in front of my friends' kid because it would trigger an obsession that could only be calmed by sitting her in front of it. Kids who were obsessed with the first one are now aware of what a theater is and how to manipulate their parents into taking them there.

I heard that Disney had a special treatment for the native language in the first movie. It was well received, and they specifically didn't have the characters speak English during songs that featured the native language. I forget how it was worded. Does anyone have a link to this analysis?
They hired native singers for the soundtrack. They also had most of the original voice actors in for an official Hawaiian language dub, which they distributed to schools in Hawaii (but did not release for home use). The Hawaiian dub came out in 2018, two years after the original release. Still, remarkable for an almost extinct language.
