Crosswalks with just a sign and no street indication of a crosswalk should be banned.
Also, never rely on a crosswalk even with lights. Always make sure traffic in the lane you're about to cross sees you and is definitely stopping for you. Every lane. No need to put your life in the hands of a driver who may be looking at their phone.
