What exactly are potato waffles and what is the preferred method if consumption?

Ever since the first time I saw a box labeled "potato waffles," I thought they were basically hash browns, but I just looked it up and apparently this is the source of some controversy.
So to answer your question ... They are either hash browns or not hash browns. Probably they are consumed in a manner similar to hash browns.

Nope they weren't fried and were more like that:

I ate them as a side dish.
