Essentially yes, It is cheaper to build one model and unlock functions in software.
Now we wait for the hacker community to tear it apart and release an unlock all package.
Reminds me of old Pioneer Kuro plasma TVs. With some models, you could solder one tiny capacitor to the mainboard, and it would unlock "Elite" model features.
Only Mercedes on its higher tier models.
Doesn't BMW and Tesla also have Paywalled features?
BMW for minor driving assistance and recording (like cockpit recording). In Tesla is autopilot, major driving assistance, blind spot showing and accident prevention.
