Sooo I work the front desk at a national hotel chain. I am a white 30 something female and my district manager is a white 70s something male. I’m relatively new to this hotel and to the area. I’ve only been in the Nashville area for a few months. I’ve been working Saturdays by myself with only our semi retired district manager in the back to assist with complaints as he does not know the system at all, so I’m essentially alone for this shift.

My second week here, he called the front desk to tell me a few jokes that were mostly cheesy dad jokes. For clarification when he calls the Front Desk he calls from his office phone to the front desk phone so on the hotel line. He isn’t calling my cell or anything. So today I get a call from his office and he tells me he’s cleaning out his briefcase and found some old jokes.

He proceeds to tell me the most vile racist jokes I have ever heard.

I don’t know if he assumed that would be welcome because I’m white and this is the south or what… But my background is in racial equity and I absolutely do not want to stand for this. He left shortly after so I’m the only employee on property other than housekeeping and I am not sure what to do. Do I finish out the shift and then never come back??? Do I even bother trying to talk to the GM about it?

Just to give you an idea, here is two of the jokes he told me …” what do you call a black woman who has an abortion? A member of crime stoppers” “ what is a crying shame? When a bus full of Black people goes off the cliff with empty seats.”

Is this really what y’all are doing in Nashville like what is going on? I’m so confused. I really liked this job, but I don’t think I can look at myself in the mirror and make money for these people…..

What should I do? Should I walk out? Should I call the GM? Should I finish out the shift and then call the GM?
