I think a lot of westerners don't really know that, prior to China invading, basically all of Tibet was a feudal serf state (or that the US supports the Dalai Lama's claims against China monetarily)

Also we should add to this that Lincoln didn't really do that. The slaves started liberating themselves and joining up with the Union Army, and they became such a big component of that army and such a huge disadvantage to the South that some of the Union generals just kind of rolled with it.
