What’s their government like though? It doesn’t seem like a left leaning coup government like the AES states. The AES is a confederation with a goal of federalizing. If they add countries that aren’t in line with them ideologically, it might cause problems.
For comparison, afaik the East African Federation has overextended itself and as a result has had trouble actually moving forward with federalization.
Is the AES AES?
I'm waiting list on them to prove it one way or the other. Everyone definitely has Sankara in mind, so the vibes are good. Hard to give a confident "yes" under a military government, but I haven't yet seen them do many hibg particularly disagreeable.
Armchair mode: First Traore needs to stay alive, then get his shit done as far as security and development, then get a civilian government set up. Things that would fuck up the process: CIA shiz, hard times of some sort come up and people become disinspired, some sort of weird Russian brainworms take root (unlikely).
I think it's in a similar state to Cuba immediately post revolution, and it could easily follow the same path. It has a very proud history with Sankara that Traore regularly evokes, and he was involved in Marxist groups when he was younger.
Much less is said about Mali and Niger, so I don't know.

Now we need someone who can give them sea lane access. Who is most likely out of neighboring countries with a coastline?
