with a smart lock on it. I feel like I would need to install another smart lock on the inner door, otherwise, it would defeat the convenience of smart locks. Open to any solutions people have
Smart lock on the security door would allow you to carry only 1 key if you have a keypad lock. Though with a gate door like that, you would need it to be 2 sided which I don't not know of any.
Though if you had a keyless smart lock on the outside, a potential thief would have to have both lockpicking/crowbar entry + digital entry capabilities which may reduce risk, but probably not much.
From a practical perspective those doors are worse than useless because they cost money and offer little to no benefit. If you need a key to get out from the inside, it js a fire hazard, if you don't, you might as well not have it (the case at businesses that have it because they must follow fire regulations more strictly).
Yeah, I don't like the idea of a key-only lock for any door that would be considered a fire route.
I'd much rather go for a smart-deadbolt which also has a key option (in case of dead battery) on the inner door, and leave the outer/gate door unlocked when i.e. you're only gone for a shorter time or if you've a rental which you need to provide code/keyless entry to.
Alfred Z-Wave locks play fairly nicely with HASS in terms of lock/unlock and battery monitoring, though I don't believe your can set codes that way. That do have a wireless gateway but it's flakey and uses services hosted in AliCloud.
