Fun fact, western sanctions won't magically go away even if Ukrainians surrender and Putin got what he wanted 🥰
Not a single russian will have a retirement until every Ukrainian dead soldiers family is compensated, the country rebuilt, Crimea is given back to Ukrainians and Russia refund the west for all the equipment they've sent to Ukraine.
And you know what the best part is? The longer they stay, the longer it will take Russia to recover. And we are already speaking about centuries here.
Sorry, but why should the average Russian pay such a toll for decisions made at the top?
Like I understand reparations, especially as modern warfare is quite damaging to civilian architecture (even when it is not explicitly targeted), but cutting back all social spending will make the situation in Russia even worse than it is now and it will be deeply unpopular.
Like I'm not trying to argue with you, I just want to understand why you think this way.
Because all Russians wanted and supported the war don't you know that? We can't have empathy for the people of Russia, they are the empire and Putin is Darth Vader!!
The average Russian either explicitly supports the war or willfully looks the other way as his country is waging a genocidal invasion.
And I am not talking about those who are afraid to speak up. I am talking about those who have the mindset of "well if it needs to be done then it should be done". As long as it doesn't personally affect their life, they don't mind.
Having to cut social spending in the future isn't a result of sanctions. It's a direct result of spending the social fundind reserves for war. That's a problem internal to Russia and countries outside have no influence on it and have no obligation to compensate it.
Then I guess you support the same position in regards to Afghanistan. By your own standard, every American should have their assets drained to rebuild and restore Afghanistan right?
Saying this scenario is wildly unrealistic is not the same as saying we should bow down to Putin. It’s highly doubtful that Ukraine will even be able to restore all the territory they’ve lost since the start of the invasion, let alone get Crimea back. Sanctions haven’t been all that effective at this point either. Russia is still importing processors through middle men nations and has found perfectly willing buyers for national resources outside the West.
Expecting to subjugate the Russian economy to indentured servitude to pay reparations not only to Ukraine but to NATO? It’s just straight up not going to happen as much as we want to fantasize about it. I wouldn’t even be surprised if most of Europe begins importing Russian natural gas within a few years of the war ending again.
