winter is here, and my heels are cracking. what do you guys do for the skin splitting at the back of your heels?
It's been a while since this has happened, but I've been running pretty regularly lately and the calluses are building back up on my feet, and then the skin split on the back of one of my heels.
I just throw a Band-Aid on it usually, but do you guys regularly use lotion on your feet or maybe just on your heels to avoid dry or cracked skin on your feet, or do you just throw tape or a band-aid on it as well?
Quick clarification, I do run on the balls of my feet so I'm guessing this is from the walking I regularly do every day as well, rather than specifically caused by my running, since my heels don't often at the ground, but I'm just curious what other people do about cracked heels if they get them.
Gold Bond heel cream and a rubber-lined heel sock when sleeping. If it gets really bad and you don’t have time for that, take a shower, then Super Glue the cracks shut.
Healthy skin doesn't split. Once you get it healed up, start using Flexitol Heel Balm - it'll keep the skin soft (and prevents calluses) by promoting dead skin falling off. The stuff is magic.
Yea, it only happens when things are good and callused up for a while. That's really interesting, it promotes dead skin falling off, I'll definitely look into it. Thanks!
Get a callus stone/rasp. That'll help too. Keep it in the shower, slowly work those callouses down. Once it's healthy skin it won't take as much work to keep it there.
That stuff is great! Put it on twice yesterday and can walk without that stinging pain that usually greets my first steps this time of year. The cracks aren't gone yet, but I'm optimistic.
I do a lot of walking also, but I took a break in my feet got all soft and lazy again.
I go through cycles of long walking /hiking adventures and the cracks happen when I'm building the calluses back up, but this is the only one so far si I threw a band-aid on it and it's fine.
Maybe at the beginning of next cycle I'm going to try some of these debriding creams and see if I can keep the calluses from forming.
Take a shower before bed, apply coconut oil to your feet (like a dime sized amount), and put in clean socks while you sleep. It should help moisturize, and coconut oil has anti fungal properties as a bonus. I have refined virgin coconut oil, it doesn’t have a strong coconut smell so I can use it for cooking too.
