This is ultimately why I decided to roll my own instance. I'm keeping my backup here though in case I mess something up, but full control is nice to have.

Agreed. I haven't come across any instances I care to participate in that have that enabled though.
What is that? Please let me know before I dive in head first on the self hosted wave

Yeah that got me pretty hard, I thought whitelist was just adding instances, but alas it banned any other instance. Weird choice IMO.
Worked around it (I think) by making a user and have that user sub to communities, but being able to include a whole instance would have been great.
