Hello Games did an ARG for the Waking Titan update in 2017. They sent out a number of them to people that participated and registered.

Prized possessions. Having old rabbit foot as a prized possession feels kinda weird, but sometimes your destiny is handed to you, you are not always given a choice.

I remember reading about them on the wiki, but that is all I know about them.
I still have mine, still wish it would have had some in-game use.
The Waking Titan ARG was THE MOST bonkers game launch thing I have ever seen and when I try to explain parts of it ("We had to collaboratively solve puzzles to unlock a fuzzy image on a web page that revealed another inscrutable clue", "We sent an actual human to a random physical location to collect the next clue by hand"), I get gobsmacked stares.
I remember one of the people sent to get things was in South Africa. They couldn't get it because they stopped at a convenience store that was robbed.
