I see that this joke is satire, making fun of those people now. Which is fine, just not my cup of tea since I grew up with people who actually believed that and weren't using it sarcastically.
With the feedback you're getting it seems to be falling flat then - a joke that's more easily interpreted as perpetuating the issue is not going to have that intended outcome
