So, living in the cousin-fuckingly deep south, the LP is actually a great tool to redirect votes away from Trump.
There's pretty much zero chance I can sell the local rednecks on Biden, but I've had decent luck with the whole break-room-political-banter situation - they'll have Fox or some shit on, get all heated about whatever the bobble-heads on screen tell them to, then start bitching to me about it.
My strategy is to bitch right along with them - don't defend Biden or (more often) Hillary, but connect whatever it is they're whining about to Trump, and lump him in with whichever dem is in their spotlight.
Like when they bring up Hillary's emails, I'll hit em with something like "Dude, I don't know how they get away with shit like that - if I did a tenth of what Hillary did with her private email server or Trump smuggling classified docs over to his private property, I'd spend the rest of my life in prison!"
'Both sides' em. End with a sales pitch for the LP as the only viable alternative, and hopefully you'll get that "hmmm" response.
Don't get me wrong, the LP is a bad fucking joke, but you can do some good talking up their on-paper highlights to the less crazy end of the Y'all Quaeda horde.
So I have a fake white supremacist Facebook account where I befriend other white supremacists, and I convince them a vote for Biden will kick off race war which is what they want. It has worked!
I will never stop saying this, that our whole nation is being held hostage by the segment whom believe WWE storylines.
If you try to drive facts and reason and logic at them, you are just fitting right into the role of the "Bad Science Guy" character introduced during the "Covid: Locked down - In A Cage" story arc. They are not siding with the nazis and mobsters because they present a great fiscal policy, they are siding with the "cool bad guys who can do whatever they want" and they delight in the hate they get because it validates their admiration of power. This is feelings, never, ever politics.
If you want to change how they think, you have to change how they feel, and while it doesn't have to be exactly dangling accelerationism of race war, you can tug at people's heart strings and change their narratives just a little, or you can make them more afraid of stories they haven't paid attention to yet, like "climate change needs to be taken seriously because it's going to make the migrant situation worse" off the top of my head. We don't win with data with people who didn't use data to get into their position.
Dude sorta same. Not to that extent because I mostly don't need to interact with staunch reds in my area but when it happens I do the same. This past week I did it by telling them that I don't watch news on TV period because both sides just want to make you made with fake news to sell you ads. Then I mention I use multiple neutral third party news sites online for my news (which is true).
I actually like using their terms against them too, calling them snowflakes and insinuating things about them. Works especially well if in a neutral non confrontational term.
If libertarians wanted what they said they wanted, they'd be progressive Dems.
They're all hung up on "no taxes" and to dumb to realize the reason regular people's taxes are so high, is the wealthiest no longer pay their fair share.
We could have a lot more social programs and lower taxes, but the wealthiest donate heavily to politicians to prevent that rather than just paying their damn taxes.
I already say that everyone is a libertarian when they are teenagers and think they know better for themselves than anyone else could. The only people who keep being libertarians are either too dumb to realize how good taxes and public goods/services are or are too self centered to ever consider that they could be wrong.
Libertarianism works really well in communities sized under Dunbar’s number. Once you have more than that, you need much stronger laws. Young people just don’t have the experience to know just how much diversity there is in the world around them.
Dunbar’s number is only around 150, so that greatly limits the number of situations Libertarianism works well in.
If we raise taxes for the ultrarich, then those libertarians will have higher taxes when they become ultrarich! Which will happen to them any day now, they swear!
I'd say their real fault lies in not accepting that zero regulations ultimately means that whoever gathers the most influence the fastest will corner every market, and you will no longer have the "choices" that their free market capitalism promises.
It's extremely simple. History his rife with examples. Modern day is full of examples.
The 2nd largest fault is thinking that people will do what's in their best interest. If fire departments, roads, etc are a good idea, people will opt to subscribe to those services / maintenance of their own volition. This again ignores the history of what has already happened, and why these became involuntary tax funded services to begin with.
More likely, those services would be controlled by the rich and the price would be set to exclude x% of people who are too poor to pay. Then someone's house catches on fire and before you know it half your workers are homeless. Not good for business. So what's the solution? Make the middle class pay for everyone's fire protection of course! (Should be the rich paying for it, but you know, capitalism)
Remember, the rich are the enemy... Stupid people are the victims just like poor people.
They're in no way progressive Dems. They don't believe in stuff liked negative externalities. They don't just hate taxes;they hate governmental interference in nearly all of their lives.
Progressive democrats generally affirm the incredible value and importance of government.
While there may be some overlap on topics of personal freedom, such as reproductive rights or drug decriminalization, libertarian views of government itself are much closer to classic conservatives. They both want to dismantle the government as it exists today.
Edit: or perhaps I misunderstood what you meant, which is that progressive democrats actually fight for a tangible reality in which liberty is increased for all. At which point we agree z
I consider myself a progressive libertarian... I want government to be just big enough to transfer wealth from the rich/corporations to the people/social services and to stop corporations from destroying things... I want government almost entirely out of my life otherwise until I need them for something
Edit: in addition I don't believe in taxes on individuals. I think the corporations should be paying 100% of the taxes needed to maintain a functioning society, and we the people should be deciding what that entails.
In the US yeah, but I think much the world understand that liberty is necessarily non heirarchical and capitalism absolutely needs heirarchy. In the US the mental gymnastics are so powerful that in the beginning they believed that freedom included slavery.
Libertarians are people who, when they were born, were just tiny babies with no real conception of the world beyond their small little space, and who still are, too.
For anyone checking in from Europe, these guys are basically what your "Liberal" parties amount to. They just aren't as big of a deal here because FPTP renders them uncompetitive
