Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party is on track to receive its worst ever result in a European Parliament election, after early results showed a new challenger took more than 30 percent of the vote Sunday.
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s Fidesz scored 44.2 percent, significantly lower than polls had predicted.
Sunday’s result is “a huge victory for Péter Magyar and a huge failure for Fidesz,” said Péter Krekó, executive director at the independent Political Capital think tank.
A former Fidesz party official and ex-husband of former Hungarian Justice Minister Judit Varga, Magyar galvanized voters by railing against corruption and Orbán’s regime after throwing his hat into the ring earlier this year.
He has vowed to take back the billions in EU funds destined for Hungary that have been frozen by Brussels over rule of law concerns.
“This is the Waterloo of the Orbán power factory, the beginning of the end,” Magyar said after the result.

I think they were trying to say that Croatia is no longer part of the same dominion as Hungary (Croatia was never part of Hungary, but was a vassal state of the Crown before WWI).
Thank you for the kind presumption, but I actually fucked it up and scrambled up my geography, @bokster@lemmy.sdf.org was right to correct me. I looked at a map before I wrote that, too, and I still read it wrong. I'm not even sure what i thought was between them...
As someone who grew up within cycling distance of that very border, no worries, that part of the world is confusing.
When I had elementary school geography, we were taught a different status quo on how the Balkan countries are, and the teachers back then were getting it wrong on instinct and were correcting themselves regularly because they were taught yet another one.
Does anyone know what EU political group the 30% party belongs to? Fidesz is unaffiliated but I'm hoping that this 30% voted for S&D or at least Renew.
The result basically ends with Ukraine being top priority but climate is in the backseat. :/
