What's the point of living for someone like me?
  • It sounds like you're going though a tough time. I haven't been in your exact situation, but I've had a few severe depressive episodes before. While I can't help improve your material conditions, I can at least offer some general advice for managing symptoms of depression.

In the short term, keep active. I know it sounds pointless or completely unrelated. I felt the same way, but over time it really does affect your overall mood. Go for walks, do some push ups, or find some other light exercise that works for your fitness level.

Make sure you get the right amount of sleep. With depression, some people stay in bed napping all day, and others hardly sleep at all. I tend to stay up way too late. Try to keep a regular sleep schedule. It really does have a huge impact on cognitive function.

In the longer term, find a local group where you can regularly interact with people over a shared common interest. A book club, a bowling league, community theater, whatever you're into.

Losing your job could be a blessing in disguise. It doesn't sound like you were particularly fond of the old job. Now you have a chance to find something better. Be grateful that you a family you can live with in the mean time. Some people aren't so fortunate.

I don't know you, but I hope things get better for you.

How to Extract Broken Shelf Pin?

I am re-arranging the shelves in an old bookcase, and I'm having trouble removing a few broken shelf pins inside the holes I want to use. They don't protrude enough for me to get any kind of grip with the needle-nose pliers that I used to take out the other pins.

    !

The shelf pins are this style. Quarter inch diameter. Not sure what kind of metal they're made out of. The pin itself is hollow, which rules out most of the common solutions for this kind of problem.

    !

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to remove these?

How would you like stats and levelling to work in the next Elder Scrolls game?
  • I like your idea for level scaling in some places but not others! That would mean the main story and maybe some important side quests can always be appropriately challenging, but random no-name bandits won't be walking around with enchanted daedric weapons. A perfectly immersive compromise.

  • How would you like stats and levelling to work in the next Elder Scrolls game?
  • I think I would like something along the lines Skyrim's system, where you just get better at skills by using them, but with more perks that are actually impactful and fewer perks that just boost damage without really changing how you play.

And enemy level scaling should go. I always hated seeing random bandits on the road with top-tier weapons and armor. It breaks immersion and makes my progression feel less meaningful.

  • Feature request - Swipe gestures.
  • I would love an easier way to go back to the top. It feels like the instance switcher doesn't always come back when I scroll up to up to use it. I don't know if I'm doing it wrong or what.

  • Oxenfree II: Lost Signals Review Thread | 80/100 OpenCritic
  • I absolutely loved the first one, I replayed it several times to make sure I saw everything there was to see. I couldn't put it down. I was probably going to buy the sequel no matter what, but seeing these (mostly) positive reviews makes me even more excited. Hopefully it captures me the same way that the original did.

  • I've been using Nova for years on various different phones. My wife has used it on all her Pixel phones for a while now too. I haven't noticed any real difference in performance between devices, it always feels responsive to me.

I love how many settings and options there are, you can tweak just about anything. Lots of gesture options (double tap, swipe, two finger swipe, etc) that can be assigned to just about anything. I only use swipe up to open the app drawer and swipe down to expand notifications, but you can also assign them to open any app or even like a Tasker shortcut.

  • The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has been updated to Version 1.2.0
    • By starting the game from within certain articles released on a specific Switch News channel (accessed via the HOME Menu) players can receive a number of in-game items.

I just checked, nothing in Switch News as of now. I wonder what in-game items we'll get? It'll probably just be something small like a couple meals and/or elixirs.

  • Could Ben and Jerry’s go down like Bud light, or is their ice cream too darn delicious?
  • Die-hard Bud Light fans tend to be conservative men, and Bud Light did a small promotion with a person that doesn't fit into their worldview. That vocal minority made a stink, got some press coverage, and maybe put a dent in this quarter's earnings. But most average consumers didn't care or maybe didn't even notice, and they kept buying whatever beer they usually buy.

In this case, the die-hard fans won't be up in arms. There won't be nearly as much noise to make it through to the press and therefore to average consumer. Most people won't hear about this tweet. If they do come across it, and disagree with the message, they'll probably just roll their eyes and forget about it before their next trip to the grocery store.

Another difference, some people make their favorite brand of beer a part of their identity, and treat it the way some people treat their favorite football team. I would expect there are fewer people that do the same for their favorite brand of ice cream.

  • Could Ben and Jerry’s go down like Bud light, or is their ice cream too darn delicious?
  • Ben & Jerry's has always projected a Vermonter, hippy, psuedo-leftist image as a company (despite being owned by Unilever since 2000). This tweet is perfectly in line with that image, and the die-hard B&J fans probably won't bat an eye.

  • Meta Will Nuke Your Instagram Account If You Delete Threads Profile
  • Absolutely appalling. It's a clear anti-consumer trick to lock you into Meta's ecosystem. There's no benefit to the end user at all. It's just boosting Meta's numbers so they can sell ad space for more money.

If an existing Instagram user signs up for Threads to try it out, and they decide they don't like it, they're stuck with the account forever anyway.

If a new user wants to try Threads, they have to sign up for Instagram too. That way, if Threads doesn't take off, all those new users at least have Instagram accounts they might use instead.

With Facebook and Instagram, Meta has clearly shown that they're entirely capable of making separate accounts and linking them together. They could have copied that same model with Threads. It took them more design work to make a worse user experience.
