Nicotine addiction isn't that bad - tobacco companies encourage the belief that it's more severe to keep people smoking
  • I didn't say smoking doesn't kill, it's one of the most harmful activities a person can engage in. My point was about the addictiveness of smoking, not the harm.

But I didn't read any studies because this is unpopular opinions, not unpopular balanced research.

  • Nicotine addiction isn't that bad - tobacco companies encourage the belief that it's more severe to keep people smoking

Tobacco companies had to own up to the fact that smoking is harmful in the 1960s when undeniable evidence came out. People struggled to quit because it is somewhat addictive, but mainly because they enjoyed it.

Those companies then encouraged the rhetoric about it being more addictive than heroin. It isn't. In my experience it's less addictive than caffeine.

    Here's my history with nicotine:

    • Smoked cigarettes from 15 - 26.
    • Quit totally for 14 months
    • My friend who smoked moved back to town and I smoked when I was with them.
    • Switched to vaping 8 years ago.
    • Quit vaping in January this year (2024).

I bought 30 cigars at the start of last month (April 2024) and have smoked 9 of them so far. I normally just have 1 a week if I'm having a beer at home but I went out drinking 2 nights in a row at the start of this month and smoked 6 over that weekend.

Am I addicted? Maybe, but I haven't had any nicotine this week and don't plan on having any next week either.

I urgently need to come in!!!
  • My cat was asleep on my lap as I was sat watching TV one evening. I started to drift off as well...

...then all of a sudden he used my balls as a trampoline and jumped head first into the closed kitchen door.

I screamed due to the immense ball pain, he bounced off the door, rolled several times on the floor, came to rest on the other side of the room, paused for a few seconds looking around as if he'd lost something and then just started cleaning himself.

  • Every surface would be covered in chewing tobacco so standing would be preferable. Also I'm not sure but that might be a urinal trough in front of the bar. Common before women were allowed into bars.

  • What drew you to the high seas?
  • For me it was the Simpsons when I was a kid and a relative would record it off satellite TV for me. It just carried on from there. I started recording stuff off TV myself, recording music on audio cassettes and eventually copying VHS tapes.

Then I got a PSX console and my parents "knew a guy" who burned games.

After that I heard about Napster and started downloading MP3s on the family PC. When Napster was shut down I moved onto other apps like Kazaa and Limewire.

Then I got a DVD burner. At first I just copied DVDs but when I got broadband I started downloading torrents and burned the files to DVDs.

About 10 years ago I started storing those files on a NAS. Planning on moving to Jellyfin in the next few weeks.

  • Yea, that is a bit pricey...
