Nudibranches are cute.
  • Of course.

This particular species does sting, so I would argue it is dangerous. But its mechanism is super interesting: it eats the stinging cells from jellyfish, absorbs them into its own body, and uses them to sting others the same way. Some even release acid. Incredible!

  • Nudibranches are cute.
  • What? No one is comparing them. The question was asked, are they dangerous? OP mused that they have no natural weapons, or danger per se, but instead borrow the jellyfish’s defense. So they are painful in their defense. Likely not aggressive.

“Despite the unsavory or toxic taste they can present to their non-human predators, most nudibranchs are harmless to humans, except those like Glaucus atlanticus which consumes nematocytes and so may consider you a predator and sting”

  • Paul Giamatti Boards ‘Star Trek: Starfleet Academy’
  • Agreed. For me, the only “magic” Star Trek needed was stories about relationships that took their time unfolding, with competency. There occasionally were unexplained encounters, but the focus was always on something that could be solvable when the crew worked together. There was resolution. Plus, I really liked the episodic structure of TNG and DS9, where I could get onboard with any episode almost. Within the self contained episodes there could be “twists of fate” that exist today. No more giant fantastic leaps than we already make by believing everything is in the future with their tech.

The “new” trek is too focused on being cinematic. Discovery was interesting at the beginning but it was overly precious and predictable, and overly representative. Designed to keep people hooked. I think the quality suffered greatly. I think representation is super important, having characters with diverse identities, but doing it for diversity’s sake isn’t the way. If we’re really in the future, then people just are.

  • Robin Curtis Looks Back at Star Trek III: The Search for Spock For Its 40th Anniversary
  • What a nice interview. I love the inside baseball on the craft, but also the people. It’s wonderful when the players are behind the message and also live that way. Not just selling a fantasy. Robin is so vulnerable. It’s nice to see her “humanity”, and Leonard’s, which made her a great Vulcan. 40 years really goes by.

  • RIP Bernard Hill
  • I know you’re joking but I really thought this, even though average life for men is 74 or so. He had a fiancée too. They didn’t get to marriage. Was sudden to his colleagues. And no cause given. It just… sucks. I wish for comfort for his family.

  • “Competency dockets” at Colorado courts are linking people with mental illness to community-based services, reducing recidivism and improving community safety
  • This is encouraging news. I’m very glad to hear it’s going well. I think it highlights the importance of supporting leaders who back and participate in such initiatives.

The article mentions it would be great if police had the ability to take such individuals somewhere other than jail. But I really think it's challenging to expect significant shifts in traditional enforcement practices. That puts even more of a strain on police to also be experts in evaluating the fitness of citizens. Which they shouldn’t be (at this point in history, where police officers are not trained well to handle mental health issues), even if a citizen is known to them (many reported here are repeating offenders). I think Colorado might show the most potential for change or other states however. Most states it seems are more concerned with which bathrooms kids are using and what books they can ban, rather than actually making life better, like these folks in the judicial system.

I am preparing to work in community mental health, and it's just abundantly clear that the underlying social issues contributing to justice-related and justice-impacted individuals will persist. A different approach is needed beyond what current systems offer.

The article could be clearer and more polished, but it's valuable that this topic is gaining attention.

If you are having trouble understanding all this, just keep in mind what the other poster said: tax dollars at work. Keep voting for the judges and public servants who prioritize this issue. So they can stay on and see it through. It won’t be solved in our lifetimes, likely, but we can plant the trees today that will shade future generations.

  • ‘Conan O’Brien Must Go’ Is the Best Version of Conan
  • Some of his bits on the show go on past the point of expiration, for me, and I find myself frequently skipping ahead to when it’s over to the next section. I imagine someone who is a diehard fan of his podcast and doesn’t cringe as easily will do just fine with this show. But I prefer his late night form, or when he’s on the rails, vs this. While I disagree with the article, I thank you for sharing it!

  • Silly Gimli.
  • New Reddit on mobile for me doesn’t show the same options as old. I have an account so I can curate content and block bots and users from view. On new Reddit, it only shows me report or save for alt options. I have to switch to old to see all the options. So irritating.

  • How are you people faking location to get a better price for subscriptions?
  • You can either spoof your location and payment to India for cheap rate, or go to account share Reddit and get on someone’s family plan. Some even do family India, so it’s cheap family, at that. If you don’t have friends that do this already.

Just make sure you double check the user against the thread of scammers.

  • Interview: Jeri Ryan On Taking Seven From Borg To Bi Captain Of The Enterprise To ‘Star Trek: Legacy’
  • Hey, I’m not sure if you know how un accepting your snarky jab is. It’s very un trek like.

I’m also not sure you appreciate how important representation is. It is very important that people see and read themselves in stories. It could save someone’s life. That importance cannot be understated or taken for granted.

This was likely tailored to the demographic that Picard serves. And while the writing wasn’t elegant, it’s still something. Hopefully it leads to more, as this character development is now canon.

Society is slowly crawling out of hetero normative times, where it is thankfully starting to be more common than ever to see diverse identity mainstream.

Millennials still have a streak of heteronormative thinking and cynicism, but hopefully they are one of the last generations to experience the closet.
