Alba Y823-5000 Flea Market Find
  • I didn't know about Alba before but after doing some reading I'm really liking their vintage watch lines. I wish I had paid more attention to the buckets of "as-is" watches in the markets.

  • Exactly! The speaker sounds like crap, but it may need a thorough cleaning when I get back home.

The Alba Y823-5000 is a neat little digital watch I picked up at a flea market in Osaka Japan for about $10. Beside the usually quartz watch offerings, this one had a button that will read the current time to you in Japanese with a button push.

  • It's pretty interesting to see how people give and interpret ratings in the US vs. Asia for example. In the US it seems like less than a mid-four is a gamble, in Japan you get some great restaurants hanging around at 3.0+. The reviews will say like "Everything was perfect great food, 3 stars".

  • New tourist tax will soon make visiting Iceland more expensive
  • Iceland is quite beautiful, I didn't camp but I recall the park areas being quite fierce about not venturing off of walking paths to protect sensitive things like moss that take forever to grow. That may be a reason why they don't allow dispersed camping. I'd say still go, it was beautiful in the winter and I didn't find it too crowded or unbearably cold.

  • Women less likely than men to be given CPR in public places, research finds
  • Pretty sure the article is satire. Here's something similar from Snopes. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/cassidy-boon-drowning/

From the original article: "I could have died peacefully, but now I am living a nightmare; I was sexually assaulted in broad daylight by the only person who was sober at the party; what are the chances?.”

  • Atheists, is there anything religious that sticks with you to this day?
  • If you like to talk to tomatoes...

  • "... and for some reason, we're still friends." What's your story?
  • I was new to a school and decided to skip class with a bunch of classmates I barely knew. One guy goes to the bathroom and comes back and stands right behind me. I look up and he is completely naked except for a sock on his dick hovering right above my head.

We've been great friends for close to 18 years and I just got to meet his two kids.

  • Well it had a lock icon. You can't just make those up!

  • Megaman American vs. Japanese Box Art
  • Peak cosplay right there.

  • Jesus Christ. What was the prompt, faces like melting mozerella?

  • Crooked Forest - Pine grove that grows in a deformed, curved manner for unexplained reasons
  • Unrelated, but Native Americans did this in the US to mark trails. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trail_trees

It's cool that you can still easily identify them to this day.

  • Painted nails have the same vibe and uglyness as painted teeth.
  • Weird take but definitely gonna be unpopular, haha. Does that apply to tooth whitening?

  • This game is awesome and hasn't aged at all. If you can, definitely give it a go!

  • I used to rent this game from the base video store when my parents would let me. It was always for a two day period and it took a ton of rentals to beat. I went through a lot of paper writing down those codes. I also really love the box art for the X series.

  • What is a hobby you enjoy, but seems too quirky or obscure to bring up in most conversations?
  • Thanks for the tips! Is it pretty easy to find movement specific service instructions or do you just learn to recognize parts and common build methods?

  • Once I settle down I'd love to get into full on servicing vintage watches as well.

  • What is a hobby you enjoy, but seems too quirky or obscure to bring up in most conversations?
  • Yeah so an example of throwing on aftermarket parts:

Start with your base watch, I picked up a cheap Invicta dive watch like so https://files.catbox.moe/bnxgcp.jpg

Slap on some aftermarket hands, bezel, faced, and sand the bracelet for a nice brushed finish. https://files.catbox.moe/mo52xw.jpg

This is a watch restoration I was attempting. Did a poor job but learned quite a bit. https://files.catbox.moe/9bv3pa.jpg https://files.catbox.moe/2kwaka.jpg

  • What could be the reason behind the Cyberattack against the space telescopes in Hawaii and Haiti?
  • It could be a lot of things ranging from state threat actors looking for a toehold into a network or to cost the government time and resources or people doing it for the lulz.

  • What is a hobby you enjoy, but seems too quirky or obscure to bring up in most conversations?
  • Not too quirky or obscure but I really just like to fix shit. Clocks, washing machines, cars, crooked door, hole in a sweater, electronics... Nothing is outside of my interest.

On the more obscure side I like to fiddle with wrist watches by adding aftermarket parts and modifying their overall look.

  • What are some things that disgust you irrationally?
  • You'd hate a lot of bathrooms in Asia, the majority of them are wet baths.

  • Abandoned Water Park at Thuy Thien Lake, Vietnam

This one is cheating a bit. This abandoned water park in Thuy Thien Lake has fallen into disuse but had found its second life as a tourist attraction. While the park project has been abandoned, on any given day you’ll find a number of tourists wandering around taking pictures. The best part is riding a motorbike down the decaying sidewalks between former attractions. The former aquarium inside of the dragon body held three crocodiles that were only recently removed from the premises.

What are your favorite retro PC games?

For me, it was the game Rocket Jockey released by Sega Soft in '96. It was perfect. The game featured a surf rock soundtrack by Dick Dale. The entire premise of the game was to ride around on rockets and using long cables to yank your opponents off theirs. Referees were also fair play. I don't think I've met anyone else who has played the game, so if you have, let me know!
