As much as I think Russia is a hellish pit that radiates evil, even I recognize that the intentionally fragile global economy requires Russian grain to flow freely if we don't want half of Africa (and probably part of Douth America) straight up federating with Russia.
Astroturfing has become endemic to reddit. If a given subreddit has more than like 5k subscribers, you can assume someone is probably trying to sell something on it - if not a product then a brand or idea. I hope ActivityPub platforms are successful but not so much that they get polluted with that crap.

They will likely only allow apps and instances which they approve, and which agree to tie into their monetization APIs. Just like reddit should have done with third party apps, if they weren’t run by the stupidest fucking sentient creature on the planet.
