On the Future of Commander (WotC taking over management of the format, considering adding more concrete power level rankings)
  • @mike @blubfisch
I feel the same, though I do think it's correct for them to step in to create a shield if the community is going to be garbage like this. *sigh* This is why we can't have nice things

On the Future of Commander (WotC taking over management of the format, considering adding more concrete power level rankings)
  • @luxyr42 @mike Obviously we haven't seen this enacted yet, but I wonder if it'll end up being similar to the Arena Historic Brawl ranking system.
I know Amazonian has run into issues where including a high-power card in a low-power deck bumps her up to a high-power tier despite playing a pile of durdle cards.
I guess that's what the conversation is for.
But also, there's never been a good way to rank commander deck power so *shrug* can't be worse than what we already have

  • The Commander Bans: Hard Truths | Tolarian Community College
  • @mike I think with the "shouldn't have been printed vs should be printed into the ground" thing, the idea is it shouldn't have been printed in the first place because it's bad for the format, which is also why it should be banned. But given the reality that it was printed, it should at least not be strongly gate-kept due to price, creating a high amount of inequality. Especially because that high price limits options later.

  • August 26, 2024, Banned and Restricted Announcement
  • @andrew @MysticKetchup I'm also surprised they didn't ban around it. I guess it's because they originally intended it to just be a commander card, so they're okay with it not being in Modern?

  • Secret Lair x Dungeons & Dragons 50th Anniversary Superdrop
  • @KoboldCoterie @MysticKetchup though between the Astarion and Karlach bundles, it sure is thirsty

  • Blogatog: While we continue to do Universes Beyond, the Magic in-universe sets also serve an important function. Having sets that don’t have to interface with outside partners has a lot of advantages.
  • @meant2live218 @mike maybe 3 standard sets plus the permanent standard set that they announced would work. If that's just 200 or so evergreen standard cards it would provide that extra bump

  • Mark Rosewater: "We did market research to see if there was an audience for Universe Beyond-less formats. Only 7% of respondents were interested. Too small a group for a format we'd officially create.
  • @Semjaza @mike take my cousin. He got a perfect score in the ACT and got full ride scholarships to basically anywhere in the country. To him, magic is the same as any other board game on the shelf. He pulls out some decks when he has friends over, and then puts them away, and maybe gets out Catan next time. Most of his cards are from Legions block, and he's never played in a store in his life.
    It's not brains, it's priorities.

  • @Semjaza @mike no, what they mean is 75% of magic players have never played with a planeswalker card. Most magic players don't buy boxes or singles, they just pick up a pack at Target sometimes. They've probably got enough cards to build a couple decks if they use all their commons. Many use old cards, from before Planeswalkers were invented. Many are kids. Planeswalkers don't come with all their rules text written on the card, so many set them aside because they don't know what to do.

  • Bloomburrow | Episode 5: Nightfall in Fountainport
  • @Evu @silverchase I haven't read them yet, but they did announce that Jace wasn't actually going to Bloomburrow, and that art was from a special "imagine if Planeswalker 'x' went to Bloomburrow"series.

Besides, tomorrow is the big announcement stream. I'm sure they'll have more stories and a ton more cards spoiled in the next few weeks

  • Do you fake falling behind in Commander to avoid getting focused on?
  • @TheMagicer @Basilisk
😂 I personally see a T1 Sol Ring as a challenge from the universe to try and go 1v3 and take them all out by myself. It usually ends with me dying spectacularly.

  • Do you fake falling behind in Commander to avoid getting focused on?
  • @TheMagicer of course I have other decks that are better at drawing cards so it's fine if they overextend because I can probably draw out of it. Definitely deck-dependent

  • Do you fake falling behind in Commander to avoid getting focused on?
  • @TheMagicer carefully conserving resources is actually a very important skill in the game.

I play a Iroas aggro deck that can be very explosive, but is bad at drawing cards.
It needs to get to 7 devotion for Iroas, but any extra creatures don't bring much benefit while do bring a lot of risk. If I have no cards in hand and get board wiped, I'm basically done. So I always try to hold back as much as I can after 7 devotion to prepare.

Im glad you're thinking about this! A real level up.

  • Do you fake falling behind in Commander to avoid getting focused on?
  • @TheMagicer I guess it depends on what you mean by "fake falling behind".
I do conserve my resources to avoid being perceived as a threat. That's not only proper resource logistics, it's also saving my stuff from removal to reduce risk.
I will also argue that I am not a threat based on my board state compared to other players, or try to convince people that some plays are unnecessary.

I think the difference is between lying about my luck vs being strategic in how I present my board state

  • "Outside the game" in Commander?
  • @xgranade imo this is more of a rule 0 matter. If I had a card like that in my deck, I would get the table's permission before starting and bring a replacement card in case someone objects.

  • Rulings question... "creatures get" modifier and cards that care about power/toughness when creatures enter the battefield
  • @bec pantlaza will see the creature enter under the effect of Elesh Norn.
"Creatures get" is a status effect that applies as long as a creature is on the battlefield. It doesn't trigger, it just is.
Compare this with an activated or triggered ability which goes on the stack and can be responded to.
Elesh Norn simply changes the rules of the game, so Pantlaza never gets the chance to see the bigger version of the creature
