Is Lemmy.ml missing from the fediverse explorer?
  • I'm on Lemmy.ml and am anything but a "tankie". Love it here. Tonnes of tech/varied posts in my main subscribed feed and I've never noticed anything other than a minimal dose of drama...Facebook or Reddit are much more toxic in comparison which is part of the reason I left those places.

  • Microsoft to test “new features and more” for aging, stubbornly popular Windows 10
  • I just wiped Windows from my drive yesterday and committed to Fedora after dualbooting for 15 years...I've been maining Fedora for a while and always kept Windows around "just in case", but never actually seemed to need it. This recall/AI spyware was it for me though. Gaming has been a breeze for a while on Fedora/Linux due to Steam/Proton...such a great feeling to finally be completely rid of Windows!

  • What are some underrated episodes from each series?
  • Voyager: S3, Ep. 23, "Distant Origin" is one of my absolute favs. It follows the team's interactions with a not-so-alien race and the friction in their culture between science/academia and religion. I love Voyager overall, but this episode had me on the edge of my seat.

  • Parents, what your mobile phone/tablet policy for your children? How old are they?
  • Mine are 5 and 3 and from what I gather from other parents, I have the most draconian rules of them all 😅. My kids watch very little TV...only a little before bed. They can start playing on their tablets for a bit before that, but they only have educational games (G-Compris and Khan Academy Kids, etc.) and a few other FOSS ones. I've tried teaching them to use a controller to play some SNES/N64 games on my Retropie with no luck...but according to my son's SK teacher, that's not such a bad thing. Just trying to avoid them turning into tech zombies as much as I can...they're pretty much living as close to the 90s upbringing I had as possible haha

  • Smart meter data: the Government’s at it again
  • The Ontario government has had a few initiatives to push smart thermostats and my area just had our water meters upgraded to smart ones. I know nothing about the water meters, but I block the Google telemetry from my Nest Thermostat (unrelated to the gov't program) via my pi-hole at least. By definition, if you sign on to the Enbridge thermostat initiative you are agreeing to send your usage. Not really sure of the impacts of this article on Canada, but pretty chilling nonetheless!

Promoted on TikTok, ‘No Thanks’ boycott app targets products tied to Israel
  • There are other privacy-respecting trackers that could be used for app improvement. At the end of the day, Google profits from the data collected here, and Lemmy has a big community of users looking to avoid this. Tangentially, Google also has massive contracts with the Israeli military that have recently come under fire in the news...just another reason to use different app-improvement trackers if the goal is to truly boycott/divest, etc.

  • I pointed out the trackers that are included in this app for full transparency...not everyone likes having Google and Facebook on their phone. The inclusion of these trackers also hint that the app isn't open source, which was the initial question. I'm not sure any of this called for such an inflammatory response...

  • Looks like it has Google AdMob, CrashLytics, and Firebase Analytics trackers...as well as FB Share according to Exodus. While I totally support the cause, this app is definitely tracking/profiting off of it's users behind the scenes.
