  • The whole point of doing it this way is that it doesn't need to be maintained. Once it's full you just fill the tunnels up (probably with dirt and/or rock) and close them off and you're good, it'll sit there for those 100,000 years.

  • Iirc, the problem with desalination is that it doesn't actually produce salt, just a very salty water slurry. So for them to produce usable salt they'd have to dry it out or something. Not that that sounds like it would be particularly difficult, but it's an extra step.

  • Gandalf wouldn't even still be there, since he was only there to aid in the fight against Sauron. He'd have gone off to Valinor shortly after Sauron's defeat, together with the rest of the elves. And there'd be no Aragorn to be a good pal and extend the good lifespans of the realms of Men, so Gondor would never get a new king and the realms of Men would likely fall to evil a bit into the third age.

  • No, because I'm not. This was what i experienced when i first came to lemmy a bit over a year ago (i think? It was when reddit made their api paid). Things may have changed since, i wouldn't know since i blocked the instance after i was sure of what was going on after like a month.

  • i doubt they'd have time to drown tbh, at depth a small leak is likely to cause immediate and sudden implosion, instantly crushing anyone inside. not sure how that would play out in a larger non-circular space though like rapture.

  • Yes, technology does march forward. That doesn't change the fact that many cars you're not even allowed to touch yourself, even the few things you can fix that don't require expensive speciality tools.
