Funnily enough, this comment has already been said.
I think the poll numbers will act the same way to moderate what people say. I don’t think total karma was important, it’s seeing a community you’re in agree/disagree with you, and all the dopamine/negativity that comes from that.
Is there any evidence that he has? All I’ve seen points to a ridiculous amount of interest.

Is just ridiculously false. If you think it is true, make a service to do this trivial thing for people, and become a millionaire overnight.
Facebook, Instagram, whatsapp, etc all require a login. It’s not something new, and twitter has always been more of an exception.
The reason is almost certainly for tracking, to improve ads. The users need to pay back the billions the company cost, eventually.
I would assume the boat was over limit, so was not legal to move, which would make you assume that they would want to make it safe before allowing it to move. Hopefully this results in procedure changes. :(
