What's the most useless skill you've mastered, and how did you end up getting so good at it?
  • The pen flip/flicking seems like a skill I would love to learn. Do you have a video or know of a video showing or teaching this?

  • We saw The Terminator 4K restoration; how did it look?
  • I get it, on one hand I can see trying to make sure it looks good for years to come. And I also see why people are upset from a historical context. As a person who grew up with aliens and terminator on vhs/laserdisc/dvd, I love and appreciate the film grain. And I can appreciate some removal of the grain to help with clarity. But remove every bit of grain makes it look and feel like a different movie. I also understand why they attempted to update the audio to go with the film, but again I also appreciate leaving the original audio alone so that people can have a little of the original left to enjoy. Over all I consider this to be both a good and bad thing. Cameran is doing things most studios don’t or won’t do which is allowing studios and other group who do restoration work to see what the winds of change are requesting of them.

  • True I did forget to sing the praises of the black nes cart, and honestly they are nicer looking than the mass-market official grey carts we got.

  • Interesting that they released a game on the digital store when the predecessor basically gave the middle finger to Nintendo and made their own carts for the nes that were not authorized. their carts would use in-built switches to bypass the drm chip on the nes.

  • What is an underrated/forgotten video game that you think deserved a second chance?
  • I waited to see if anyone mentioned it, but, POD. A old 1997 racing game from Microsoft built by Ubisoft. You can get the gold edition on GoG for rather cheap but I would absolutely love to see a remaster or remake. Unfortunately I would rather it not be made by Ubisoft as I don’t want to be forced into a separate account login setup from Ubisoft.

  • If memory serves that particular brown in recent manufacturing from Lego was known by the public over some time to have embrittlement issues, so probably not something you did to it, but something as of now that Lego has fixed on their end if you pick up that brown from a current set or from their stores.

  • Every section had missing downloads. But with some web inspection, I found some interesting obfuscation using what I think is JavaScript on the web pages that “used” to hold the download links, for the files that were requested to be removed. If we can figure out how to reverse the code to reveal the link again we could grab (assuming they are still on the server) the files manually.

If you want to chat about this I’m on matrix

  • Vimms Lair is getting removal notices from Nintendo etc. We need someone to help make a rom pack archive can you help?
  • I can confirm that the script still works, but sadly the site owner of Vim has removed the file from the server. The script sees a file link but will download nothing. When testing the script with just NES, it will see a game, but will throw an error of “remote files name has no length”, so going forward you could test via a vpn and see if they adjusted their files to be available via a country that doesn’t care, or they just haven’t gotten around to cleaning up their file directory list post removal.

P.S. the script showed that 23 field failed to download so one can assume those files were the one Nintendo decided to have them remove.

  • There is a bit of advise for actors/actresses from a director (forgot their name) where they said “if the only thing about you is that you are on time/early, and you are pleasant to work with, you will always find a job in acting. If you don’t care and lack punctuality, and are hard to work with or around (if necessary) then you will find fewer and fewer opportunities as time goes on.”

  • What are you average file sizes for movies and series?
  • My server has movies ranging from 480p to 4k. Anything under 4k that is a movie shouldn’t be more than 2gb-3gb (this is also highly dependent on the movie in question, lotr movies can be huge so as long as it looks good I don’t mind, I have the space) when it comes to 4k movies it highly depends on the movie but I like to keep them below 10gb if I can.

When it comes to tv shows if it’s 1080p I expect long-form (1 hr) to be around 1-2gb. Less for shorter shows.

As far as bit rate and codecs are concerned keep things as simple as I can .h264 or .h265. My server doesn’t support AV1 so I can’t use that yet maybe in the future. .h265 high10 tends to make my server work too hard. I try to keep the bit rate on the low side as my server is a bit on the low end so a bit rate below 10mbps keeps the server happy and everything plays nice and snappy.

  • We MUST learn from the James Cameron 4K debacle
  • It doesn’t help that there is an interview from George at Cannes where he was presented the Palm d’Or and he mentioned and compared his tinkering with Michelangelo’s Sistine chapel. The biggest issue with the comparison other than the ego boost is that when Michelangelo was done with a work he left it alone, he didn’t go back 5-10 later and asked to “fix a few issues he had with it” he would go wholesale a redo it from scratch (sculpture, not painting) to fix the issues he saw from before. So George can go eff off with his comparison and be happy that he is rich. And becoming extra unpopular every time he opens his big mouth.

Questions about getting parts from eBay sellers

The people at https://retropocket.store/ have great products and it seems that i've stumbled on their ebay store. They are selling a GB Pocket Main boards that are either refurbished or completely rebuilt for a very reasonable cost. Does anyone on here have any experience with their work to recommend them as a parts supplier?
