I really don't like killing players, and when I am a player, I really don't like having my pc killed. That being said, I like the idea of player killing, because then it ups the stakes (theoretically. I've never played in a permadeath campaign). Parties would have to think twice about taking on a more powerful foe, or consider running away as a very real option to avoid death, or reconsider doing absolutely stupid shit that will get them arrested and executed. It (again, theoretically) makes the game more realistic in a sense?
But then you're playing it, and your character you wrote a 3 page backstory for dies because of bad rolls or shitty combat balancing, and now you're pissed because you really liked playing that character, but the dm isn't going to rewind time and the party has no way to resurrect the character or at least preserve the body until they do have the means. Or you're on the other side of this as a DM, and watching a good player get pissed off and quit the table because of it.

ooh boy, and I was going to do pop!OS on my main rig thinking mint wasn't good for gaming.
Been using Mint for about a month now on my daily laptop. It's nice, not having to deal with windows' bullshit, but on the other hand I've had a number of issues with it; most recently, it sort of reboots itself every so often randomly. That, and issues with not being able to hear high fidelity audio on a bluetooth headset while also using the headset's mic (there's a codec that let's me use both mic and audio, but the audio is low quality).
Usually though issues get fixed with an update, just gotta check the update manager often.

edit: There are also situations where you don't have a choice but to buy water bottles. maybe you're out of your home, your personal bottle is empty, and it's hot out. maybe you're at the airport. sure you could drink from water fountains, but what if they're nowhere near you? or what if they don't work?

I'll check it out, but it seems like I fucked up the Linux install somehow, to the point where it says "something went seriously wrong" in the BIOS before shutting my PC off. I have no idea what I did wrong since I didn't even touch the flash drive it was on.
Currently have windows booted to partition my drive and make space for a full Linux install, so I can't do that command right away. here's an inxi -Fxz command though from before, does this help any?

ok so I'm running a mint cinnamon edge install on my laptop, booted off a flash drive for now. currently, my biggest issue is the mic. Presently, whenever I try to use my mic, it instead takes whatever audio output my system is currently producing (be that music from YouTube or system sounds) and thinks that that is the input. it does not however, pick up anything with my voice. this happens both with my built in laptop speaker and when I connect my Bluetooth headphones and try to use the mic on those.
I've fiddled with pavucontrol settings for a while and wasn't able to fix it. it seems like it's not detecting my built in mic, saying it's unplugged or something, but that doesn't explain why I have the same issue with my headphones.
I'm thinking it has something to do with the fact that it's a live session from a flash drive instead of a full install on my PC, but I'm hesitant to do a full install without finding fixes for issues I might run into first.
if you can figure something out, that'd be incredible and I would thank you sincerely and owe you one; if not that's fine, I really don't know what I'm gonna do other than take the plunge and full install, hoping that'll fix it

all that buildup and all that payoff is just so incredible. the army coming from nowhere to blindside both the reader and Prince Barbro's army in the nick of time, just for them to thoroughly wipe the floor with them, the way literally everyone is shocked by this genuinely random development (that still makes total sense in the context of the story) just grabs me like nothing else. it's not something this story does often either, so it's especially special (ie it's not overdone in the story so it isn't stale). seeing the underdog suddenly get a huge set of reinforcements is crazy n I love it so much. and since it's a side character, it's an excellently well placed foil to Ainz already having that power and defeating the rest of the kingdom's armies. it's just... chef's kiss

I bought a laptop yesterday, it came pre-installed with Windows 11. I hate win 11 so I switched it down to Windows 10, but then started considering using Linux for total control over the laptop, but here's the thing: I keep seeing memes about how complicated or fucky wucky Linux is to install and run. I love the idea of open source software and an operating system without any of the bullshit that comes with Windows, but most of the open source stuff I have is on my android and fairly easy to install. Installing and using Linux just feels like it'll be a whole different beast that'll eat up most of my time and I'm kind of intimidated by it.
TL;DR Linux scawy, how does a barely computer literate scrub like me who's used nothing but windows since the dawn of their life get started with Linux?
