Why do some Americans get angry at other people for not speaking English?
  • Based on anecdotal evidence, "I refuse" may be more common than you think. I live in Switzerland, and out of all the expats I know who have been here a long time (20+ years), a large percentage (over half) of them still can't speak German. At all. Like, they can maybe say "thank you" but that's about the extent of their vocabulary, and many of them actually seem to be quite proud of the fact that they've made absolutely zero attempt to integrate into the local community or culture.

Now, although I'm fully aware that there are a hell of a lot of differences between Switzerland and the US, it still wouldn't be at all surprising to me if there were large groups of immigrants in the US who similarly resist learning English.

  • Person struck by roller coaster at Kings Island
  • So the guy ignores the staff, sneaks into the fenced-off area directly next to the rollercoaster tracks during operating hours, and (drumroll...) gets hit by said rollercoaster. Shocking turn of events, it's unfortunate that he didn't realize that standing right next to a rollercoaster comes with a significant risk of getting hit by a fucking rollercoaster.

  • xkcd #2948: Electric vs Gas
  • Sure, but even then there are plenty of cases where a solar panel doesn't make much sense either. If you're cutting down a tree in the woods, would you rather grab your gas-powered chainsaw out of your truck and cut down the tree, or grab your solar-powered chainsaw out of your truck, spend minutes setting up solar panels to pick up the small amount of sunlight which makes it to the forest floor, and then cut down the tree?

The point is there will always be a market for ICEs until there are batteries with competitive energy density to gasoline. You don't see solar- or battery-powered trains or construction/mining equipment because these things need huge amounts of energy to work, energy which can be easily stored in a fairly small fuel tank (which can be quickly topped off when necessary).

  • Minecraft players outraged as Microsoft deletes accounts that weren't transitioned
  • Similar idea, but it does some funky translation layer magic to get pretty much native performance. The original project is called mcpelauncher-linux, iirc it's been abandoned and forked at least once since then but I haven't kept up with it.

  • Big Surprise
  • Yeah, but even without network time updates your device's internal clock is probably accurate enough to be able to tell if 2 years have passed or not. If it has an error of ≥2 years per 2 years, you need a new clock.
