Remember being 15
  • I work at a pet store. I monitor anyone that looks between 12 and 18 closely. If I don't, without fail they're always the ones swatting at our animals for a laugh. Why, by Neptune's briny piss, would I treat them with the respect that 9/10 times they don't show to anyone else?

  • Is Lemmy an effective alternative to Reddit?
  • If you could that would help give me a place to start. My worry is how fast the content pool might shrink, can you DM me the worst offenders? The main thing that bugs me is the frequent calls for political violence from people I’m not sure have ever touched grass.

  • Is Lemmy an effective alternative to Reddit?
  • I typically browse All as Lemmy is pretty small and content feels limited. What surprised me the most was how often I see casual calls for violence and mass murder. Though as you mentioned, blocking political subs would probably help.

  • Is Lemmy an effective alternative to Reddit?
  • I'm guessing that filtering helps make it nicer, I see way more nasty and extreme shit on Lemmy than I ever did on Reddit. I want to like Lemmy, but I can't recommend it to anyone I know because of how toxic the base experience has been.

May I ask what you filtered out to make it seem like "the people are much nicer" on a day to day basis? Genuine question, not sarcasm.

  • Conservatives don't understand how to human.
  • You know, maybe casually advocating for the torture and/or deaths of millions of people might be the sign that you need to go touch some grass.

Like, seriously... do you even register what you sound like?

  • Project for people leaving Google Maps.
  • I'm not sure how or why, but Magic Earth has a FAR more complete address list than OSMand or Organic Maps where I live. It must be pulling from another data source as well, OSM doesn't have addresses for several neighborhoods in the city but Magic Earth does.

Would anyone know why that would be?

OSM not having massive chunks of my home city really does leave me with either Google Maps or Magic Earth.

  • Is linux actually gaming ready or is it just not for me?
  • When I switched I had to use Windows (gross) to make the boot disk. Turns out that was my mistake, Windows fucks with the drive just a tad and made the verification fail on the installer.

Using a live usb Linux stick I was able to download the ISO and write a new install disk. Worked flawlessly from there.

  • Is linux actually gaming ready or is it just not for me?
  • Linux gaming was always slightly buggy for me for a while. Then I tried Nobara, and since then everything has been more or less plug and play.

AC Odyssey was a bit more work to get going but that was because I had bought it through Ubisoft Connect. But even that just needed me to install it in Lutris which comes preinstalled and made the setup nice and easy.

Nobara is developed by the guy who makes ProtonGE, as a side note.

  • Canadian mega landlord using AI ‘pricing scheme’ as it massively hikes rents
  • A few things spring to mind as someone who lives in Alberta:

Alberta is looking at transferring control of some of our hospitals to the catholics (Covenant Health has a former premier and the former health minister on the board of directors, hmm) for a start. UCP has also been eyeballing getting Alberta to leave the CPP.

Can't speak for other cities, but Calgary has been turning into a shit hole for years now. Homeless people and drug addicts are all over the place lately. Rents are spiking just like everywhere else.

Personal anecdote, the last time I had to take transit there was still blood on the wall of the station where a guy had been stabbed a few weeks prior. 2023 was a nasty year for transit stabbings.

These comments feel like a basketball game, except there's a wall in the middle and teams are just scoring points on their own hoop. Also every two comments someone throws a shovelful of shit over the wall.
