Yes it offers unique user and moderator features on top of pretty much all the same features as Lemmy.
The choice of language they are using for it will be a hindrance and a help. Python is much more accessible for many programmers than rust. However it is not always as performant as rust. They may encounter bottlenecks with scaling and a few other things. Which can be alleviated by using a language that is specifically designed for those things. Then those code modules can be called by the rest of the python code no problem.
But as a much younger project piefed has already made massive strides and even stepped out ahead of lemmy. Lemmy had a 4 year head start. Combined with no clear moral qualms with the developers. It's clear why many are excited for piefed.
Not even that. It was because a disingenuous psychopath raised a big stink to the payment processors that Steam and itch rely on. As long as they want to process payments they unfortunately need the companies and have to appease them. The best thing we could do is raise a bigger opposite stink.
I will reveal to you an arcane forbidden technique. Hold your hand in front of your face. Though check first to see if there is anyone mischievous about. Palm towards you, fingers pressed together. Close to your face, preferably less than 5cm or so away. Then wave your hand as fast as you can while cursing.
You aren't disagreeing with anything I said. It's all very asterisk-y. And if my personal preference/position is unclear. I run non proprietary *nix systems at a 7:1 ratio to proprietary. Precisely because of the better support. Come October that ratio is going to be getting even more lopsided.
Oh absolutely. You're preaching to the choir here. Part of the reason I have a lot of hope around riscv. The processor designs themselves aren't necessarily open source. But with the ISA being open and open source the first to embrace. It "could" foster a new much less proprietary ecosystem.
There are many that irrationally reflexively recoil at anything "AI". Yes most of the current gatekeepers are looking to weaponize it against us. And yes they are rushing to implement it in the most wasteful and destructive ways imaginable. Chasing a few dollars more.
AI however is just a tool. And asics are being designed to be far more efficient for it. And we could also use it against the wealthy as well. But they aren't behaving rationally. Even this post will likely be down voted. Because I didn't irrationally scream and denounce it.
I will say this though. We don't need economic growth. We need to remove leaches from the economy. If we did that. We could provide a better standard of living to more people with a smaller "economy ".
Proprietary "can" mean better support. But that's asterisk heavy. Often that comes down to commercial hardware putting up road blocks to competitors. Or the open source solution being the product of a single developer in their spare time.
As others have said. Minecraft is the more known and established. Luanti is awesome though. It can do "Minecraft" and so much more. I'd say it really comes down to external factors.
Do your friends already play Minecraft. And if the don't, are they going to have money to put towards it? In the end there's nothing saying you can't do both. I will say this though. Installing and running a dedicated server for Minecraft, bedrock at least. Was way harder than luanti. But if you aren't planning on self hosting then you don't have to worry about that.
