New security page and independent audit completed by Cure53
  • @Tangent5280 @nodimetotie That’s been asked and the devs have answered a gazillion times. Search the #Obsidian Forum or the Discord.

They’ve already heard all the reasons people think they should and you’re unlikely to come up with anything new that would make them change their minds, so your best options are to either make your peace with it or find an open source alternative.

  • Are there any [#PlainText](https://pkm.social/tags/PlainText) or [#Markdown](https://pkm.social/tags/Markdown) apps that can list the full names of files, on multiple lines, on a narrow screen? Landsc
  • @ellane @obsidianmd That’s yet another Obsidian feature that makes it hard to use anything else once you’re used to it. Being able to read the whole file name seems so obviously better that it’s mind-boggling that it isn’t the standard way of doing things in all apps that manage files.

  • Obsidian: Organize Your Info, Not Your Files
  • @bowreality @gelberhut It’s fine that some people find it easier to just throw everything in one folder so they never have to think about where to put it, and value that over the benefits of using folders.

I just think they should be aware of the downsides, and others should know that using folders is neither incorrect nor inefficient.

  • Obsidian: Organize Your Info, Not Your Files
  • @austingovella @Colman @gelberhut @biscotty @obsidianmd I have a general inbox folder, but I also keep inbox folders for, say, big projects or general areas of interest.

  • Obsidian: Organize Your Info, Not Your Files
  • @Colman @gelberhut @biscotty @obsidianmd I don’t think assigning a directory to everything is any more “artificial” than assigning a tag or an MOC, but I do use several inbox folders for notes I want to process later.

  • Obsidian: Organize Your Info, Not Your Files
  • @Colman @gelberhut @biscotty @obsidianmd I use MOCs, tags, etc., too. #Obsidian lets you link freely across folders, which don’t constrain you from using other organizational methods concurrently.

  • Obsidian: Organize Your Info, Not Your Files
  • @gelberhut @biscotty @obsidianmd I agree with gelberhut. Folders are to organization as plaintext is to data, and are one of the keys to a files-first, future-proofing approach. #Obsidian could break and refuse to open, and I could still navigate my notes in any file manager and open and use them in any text or #markdown editor. That’s going to be a lot harder to do if you’ve dumped all of your thousands or tens of thousands of notes in root. #PKM

  • Different fonts for editing and reading views?
  • @berryjam Just FYI, in addition to the Minimal Theme Settings plugin, you’ll also want the Style Settings plugin to get all the customization options.

  • Different fonts for editing and reading views?
  • @berryjam I’ve tried to sign up for Lemmy twice and it’s failed both times. Please tell them they can use different fonts for live preview and for reading mode with the Minimal theme and the Minimal Theme Settings plugin.

  • Obsidian for Writing Manuals
  • @tamowafy @gelberhut @effingjoe AFAIK you need to be working in a for-profit organization with 2 or more employees to need a commercial license for #Obsidian.

Does anyone know if changing to [#Obsidian](https://pkm.social/tags/Obsidian) Sync would mean I would no longer be able to use Drafts actions to slot text exactly where I want it in my vault?
  • @ellane @obsidianmd @drafts I haven’t had any issues and I’ve been using Sync for two years. But the best place to ask is the Obsidian Sync channel on the Discord. You have a high chance of getting a response directly from Licat or another dev there. You can grab an invitation here: https://obsidian.md/community

  • What apps do you use in conjunction with Obsidian?
  • @nightscout @laroquephoto At $50, the mobile version of iA Writer has become way overpriced, especially if you’re only going to use it on an iPhone. Imo 1Writer is pretty much equally good (I own both) and last I looked it only costs $5. Fwiw, you can also sign into Dropbox with it, which you can’t do with iA Writer.
