MiniDisc release: Headspace by Occams Laser
  • Fantastic to see a MiniDisc release. Occam's Laser did a great cover of the Cathederal level music from the game Batman the Movie (1989). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nQLF40agkLc

I have two minidisc players, both of which don't record anymore. I can't find anyone to repair them but if I do, I'll be back buying Minidiscs with enthusiasm.

  • Even Apple finally admits that 8GB RAM isn't enough
  • And even if the out-of-the-box RAM is soldered to the machine, it should still be possible to add supplementary RAM that isn't soldered for when the system demands it. Other computers have worked like this in the past with chip RAM but a socket to add more.

  • We certainly shouldn’t wait for several decades, which is when a lot of the examples we teach currently happened.

Also while we should obviously be responsible, it’s disingenuous to imply that there are not plenty of verified war crimes already. There is no further context needed to show how depraved we as humans can get if we don’t keep our politicians, education and media in check.

  • The horrors of this invasion should be taught in school history. There's a danger that we look at the horrors of the past, which are also taught in our history, and think "well, I don't think this would happen in this day and age". We can't afford to stay complacent.

  • A reminder to love nature
  • In the anglosphere maybe, which most of Lemmy seems to represent. I come across countless legends doing the same work but without the same recognition. When Greta Thunberg, who I admire, became big I read an article about all the people around her age that have been doing the same campaigning. They were mostly indigenous people so nobody came along with a TV show for them.

  • Greece introduces the six-day work week
  • Would you mind elaborating? No pressure. I spent time there as a kid in the 90s and have a lot of nostalgia for the place, but I haven't engaged with the place as an adult and I'm way out of touch so I'm genuinely curious.

  • Self hosting is hard. How do you overcome?
  • I got tired of having to learn new things. The latest was a reverse proxy that I didn't want to configure and maintain. I decided that life is short and just use samba to serve media as files. One lighttpd server for my favourite movies so I can watch them from anywhere. The rest I moved to free online services or apps that sync across mobile and desktop.

  • Well, we can't trust that corruption would be low enough that this wouldn't be exploited for other reasons. Child trafficking and exploitation is off the charts. If this did actually help those kids I'd consider supporting it. But I do remember when Apple announced that they would do this that some groups that seemed reputable claimed that it wouldn't actually help. I don't know what to think of it.

  • I'm a psychologist—doomscrolling has a devastating impact
  • "I had a client with three young children, who believed that she had to keep abreast of the details of the Middle East conflict. This meant that once her children were finally in bed, she would find herself scrolling for hours in an attempt to stay up-to-date and knowledgeable on what is happening.

She believed that to be a conscientious and caring human, it is something she had to do."

I think we do have to keep somewhat abreast of what's going on. Some brands we support could be complicit. We might be voting for the very people who are fuelling the horrors that are unfolding around the world.

We as people just aren't built to process the volume of information that's available nowadays though and spending hours attempting to do so isn't the answer. On the other hand, I'm not sure that we should be unaffected by what's happening to our fellow humans either. Looking after our own well-being has to be a part of the equation though.

  • Would you mind breaking down the difference between people who immigrated illegally and illegal immigrants? I'm asking this in good faith because the online discourse has gotten so toxic that I'd like to be able to flag it when I see it.

My current understanding is that the latter language is dehumanising by describing the person to be illegal in their existence. Usually we would say that someone has done something illegal, not that they themselves are illegal.

But to those with a short attention span the difference can appear academic.

  • UN security council endorses US-backed hostages-for-ceasefire Gaza deal
  • “The ceasefire would evolve into a permanent end to hostilities”

When have the Israelis ever resisted their urge for hostility. Palestinians can’t even play a game of chess outside without a petty IOF soldier knocking the board to the ground. They constantly agitate.

I would love to see a ceasefire, but is it realistic to expect it from Israel?

  • Help me remember a Picard quote from TNG. Something about time being like an old friend.

He said something about how some people consider time and enemy, or a thief of life. But he himself (Picard) sees time as an old friend.

Anybody know the episode or full quote? I’ve searched but the newer series, Picard, is cluttering the results.
