Musk would probably come close. He can shut down internet and stop your car if you own Tesla. And he already has his Space companies. On the other hand, if Meta takes off, Zuckerberg is a close candidate followed by Microsoft.

It’s scary that the Unity debacle is not just happening in games but a very real threat not just in digital and app space but in real life.
It can happen in medicine, housing, even the food we eat if the trend of subscriptions and lock ins continue.
Despite this, a global concerted effort towards Open Source tech is still not happening.
In Unity for example, there is a push to transition to Unreal but less so for Godot. We see this happening with reddit too. And soon maybe we’ll see it in real life. What’s stopping our hotels and landlords from charging us everytime we open doors.
We see this in the rampant mandatory tips. Where everyone is automatically charged per order.
It’s scary and frustrating at the same time that there may not be a clear remedy for this. As the world shifts to subscriptions and services, do we truly own anything anymore?
Because libre office is not compatible with many others. You can open it sure but there’s no guarantee that opening .doc or .docx will have broken formatting. Not good for those in the academia or workplace where formatting are strictly enforce.
Why is there a SEARCH bar next to the bar where you can search anyway?
Muscle memory I guess. I associate the main bar with typing in websites. While the smaller one for search. That’s how I’ve been doing it for years.
The icons are pinned tabs using sideberry and CSS from r/FirefoxCSS
Ehh. Different strokes, I guess. Too much minimalism for me becomes extra step. Like if remove the search bar, I would have to type in duckduckgo.com everytime I need to search. Without the pinned icons, I would have to type gmail everytime, for example. Firefox is my secondary desktop and I treat those icons as kind of like a mini app. :)
Same. @squizzy, I don't like microblogging in general either. I was raised in the golden era of forums (the days of phpBB and vBulletin). My twitter account hasn't been touched for years now.
tweXit does have a nice ring to it. Made me laugh 😂
Speaking as someone who's mostly on a laptop screen, that thing is big. When at home (which doesn't happen a lot these days), I connect my laptop to a more modest Xiaomi 1C Monitor 23.8 Inch. I am not a techie so I'm not sure what I can use a vertical monitor for though.
For some reason, this reminds me of the old digg. I'm feeling nostalgic. :)
Sleek and beautiful. And judging from that desktop, you've got a pretty big monitor.
I used sidebery and edited the userchrome.css using guides from r/FirefoxCSS
here's some guides for them:
- https://superuser.com/questions/1268732/how-to-hide-tab-bar-tabstrip-in-firefox-57-quantum
But for reference, here are the codes for them (since Reddit appears to be down at the time of this writing)
Here's the sidebery link on github
https://github.com/mbnuqw/sidebery
Note, to find your firefox profile folder:
Was tinkering with userchrome and sidebery this day and it got me thinking how others has their firefox customized. Let's bring the fun back to firefox. Share your screenshots. :)
So far, I tried Tabliss, Momentum and currently toying with Taskade. But the "unmodded" one is nice, too as it's faster. I'm wondering if anyone here has some opinions.
As Twitter ditches its iconic branding in favor of owner Elon Musk's favorite letter "X," its open source competitor Mastodon is once again seeing usage numbers soar.
It's not just lemmy that's benefiting from Elon Musk.
As an iOS user and long time Firefox user (never switched to chrome in my life) I feel jealous. But one can only hope that we too in the APPLE walled garden won't be left behind. Though I understand that it would be a long shot. :(
I know this has been discussed a lot but so far there is no TRUE cross platform ones that work and syncs for free.
The closest is Joplin but that’s laggy and bloated.
Anyone knows of an app that
- Syncs
- Works on iOS Windows and Linux
- Free or affordable
Some apps I tried
-
Bear app - my main so far but my macbook is aging so I am planning on getting a linux notebook and I have a windows desktop at home. I managed to stay with this the longest but only because I have an iphone, ipad and mac. But now, I want to try windows or linux as well.
-
Notion- laggy. Bonus: free with education account, (I have one and it works but I don’t like its interface and database nature. It’s not as simple to just type and go.
-
OneNote- laggy. At least for me. And definitely not open sourced.
-
Standard Notes- good features but very expensive for what it offers. Especially if you want to use sync.
-
Obsidian- not technically Open source but very popular. The sync is expensive though and does not even give you storage. It utilizes the space already on your device. Feels like a rip off.
-
Evernote- I like its price proposition better than Obsidian but its bloated. And I don’t like its ethics.
Anyone else has ideas? :)

Any browser really. I missed the browser wars of old where everyone is free to use and defend their browsers.
Voting for B. A- color and background clashes. C- feels too simple and plain.
You may be right. Being on lemmy tends to skew perspectives a little bit.
Yeah but then that would be supporting and enabling Google’s standards.
In fairness. i don’t consider myself tech adept, I don’t know how to run a server but I know the importance of privacy and open source. Maybe take it as a good thing that these are being openly talked about here, otherwise the mistakes of reddit will just be repeated. Supporting closed source is a ticking time bomb.
Companies can and will betray you in the name of profit.
On to privacy and security, they ARE important. You have no idea how many people lost money in their banks or have to deal with lengthy lawsuits and procedures just to get their life back after someone impersonated them by stealing their data or ID.
In our area, OTP scams are very rampant. And people constantly fall victim to random calls asking for OTP and other details ; then have their banks withdrawn huge amount of money precisely because the issue of security and privacy aren’t openly being talked about.
Please don’t take it as a negative, but a good thing that these types of things are being discussed.
As a popular quote (paraphrased) says “those who fail to learn the past is doomed to constantly repeat it.”
We don’t want another reddit or twitter.
People are still healing from reddit’s bad decisions. Let them mourn. Let them be angry, let them go through the stages of grief in their own pace.
I agree they’re overkill. But there are sites that detect the adblocker and I just experiment which one they don’t detect. Most of the time, adguard does amazing. But some websites only adblock is not detected. So it’s a cat and mouse game for me. :) I installed them all just in case and activate and deactivate depending on which sites I am on.
Firefox is no less slower than chrome to me, imho. At least it doesn’t struggle as much. Chrome with 20 tabs lags while firefox works. Maybe there’s something in your extensions that’s causing slowdowns?
It might be a niche yeah, but it won’t be when a lawsuit looms. It won’t be when Data Privacy Laws come knocking. People underestimate the value of privacy even though virtually any job has privacy as its most basic requirements. May it be medical records, banks, NDAs, contracts, even the most basic of tasks, has some form of privacy stipulations in it.
As someone pursuing a career in health care I became more and more concerned because some store patient files and notes in unsecured text files/apps like notion, google docs and even excel. I’m sure other jobs and employment has their own privacy issues as well.
Privacy is a niche at face value but so many people underestimate its value. When everything they say or store online and even offline can be hacked, tracked or exploited, anything can be a potential lawsuit without taking the necessary precautions.
I wouldn’t count on Microsoft’s security:
https://www.npr.org/2023/07/12/1187208383/china-hack-us-government-microsoft
If this can happen to governments using microsoft, it can happen to little guys using microsoft.
With the number of people concerned about privacy, it is a wonder why chrome is even popular.
Elon Musk just turned your DMs into an ad for Twitter Blue. But you can change it back. Here's how.
Reminds me so much of tacky dating sites. Pay and be able to message! Ughh

From IMDB:
> The wanted criminal Richard Bruno Riddick arrives on a planet called Helion Prime and finds himself up against an invading empire called the Necromongers, an army that plans to convert or kill all humans in the universe.
Anyone remember this movie? I just watched it and while there are boring parts, there is potential for intrigue and interest.
The necromongers also remind me a lot of warhammer. And I can see some parallels.
Your thoughts?
Description: A twisted tale of two estranged sisters whose reunion is cut short by the rise of flesh-possessing demons, thrusting them into a primal battle for survival as they face the most nightmarish version of family imaginable.

Just watched it and I enjoyed it. Just the right amount of gore, jump scares and exposition to keep things moving and interesting.
What do you think?

Tragic, sad and a cautionary tale. Instantly made me reevaluate the contents of my fridge.
The talk about “enshittification” made me think of the very email we use for the instances we signed up and instantly, it paints a grim picture. One of my account used gmail to sign up. Some proton mail. It reminds me that these too are companies beholden to their shareholders.
Is there a fediverse answer to email? Like what mastodon is to twitter and lemmy is for reddit?
If not, maybe the fediverse can think about allowing email-less sign-ups?
As an addendum, what about the popular tools we use in our daily lives? The calendar, note tools, etc all are products of companies driven to maximize profits.
There’s a talk in the technology sub about how GitHub was acquired by microsoft and I’m willing to bet that it’s not the only popular tool that was or will be endangered of disappearing or turning worse in the name of profit.
Is there a community movement that can somehow mitigate this? Or is there really no choice for us? Is there a complete list of FOSS somewhere that are at par or at least only mildly worse than the popular mainstream ones?
