Linux will never become more widespread untill they make it more plug-and-play
  • Installing applications can be done in a few ways, typically you'll just download from your OS's software store. Ubuntu does sometimes require that you add new repositories, but to avoid that you can always give something like flatpak or appimage versions of the software you want a try. Appimages are similar to .exe files, you can just download them from the software's website - and you can get flatpak applications from flathub.org. The main downside with these is they come with all the stuff they depend on, so they tend to be a bigger file size, they can be a little slower but honestly it's barely noticable. I rarely use appimages because they won't show up in your desktop environment's application list by default and it can be a pain to set them up to show. A good default way to go is Software store -> Flatpak -> Appimage -> then finally if none of that works you could do it manually, but I don't recommend that. Ubuntu's software store tends to be behind on updates because as a distribution it's focused on stability. Once you're used to it, there's a lot of advantages to using a centralized software store instead of downloading .exe files off websites. Either way, don't let some growing pains totally discourage you! Not every distribution provides the same experience, and there's a lot of options out there!

  • I keep hearing that the Democratic Party should've paid more attention to the young white American demographic. Does this mean there was a point to the "All lives matter." movement?
  • I think that there's not just one reason we can list as why she lost. It's complicated. The young white male demographic specifically, voted primarily Republican - which makes sense given that they're being marketed to by republicans (think people like Joe Rogan, Andrew Tate, people like that). I almost didn't vote for her over Gaza - and I'm sure a lot of people didn't vote over Gaza. In regards to "All Lives Matter", I don't think so. I never got the impression that that "movement" was really about saying "Not just black people matter!", it was about being an opposing statement to the BLM movement. The words "Black Lives Matter" do not say that other people don't matter - and the movement is about police violence against black people. "All Lives Matter" was made to deny the recognition that this racial violence happens. I've seen it used a lot to defend police (and let's be honest it has ties to the whole "Blue Lives Matter" thing).

  • Who are the good guys in the Israel/Palestine conflict?
  • You should look into the history of WHY Hamas formed in the first place. Palestinians have been forcibly relocated and had their land taken since the 40's. I will say, is there any justification for the destruction and genocide Israel is committing? They've destroyed practically ALL infrastructure in Gaza including hospitals, they've got snipers shooting kids, targeting UN aid workers. Hamas and hostages are convenient excuses for them to keep doing what they started in the 40's - killing an entire native population and taking their land.

  • Best GPU type for Linux gaming PC?
  • The NVIDIA drivers are a constant source of problems compared to AMD. I've had updates completely break some games, so that if I want to play my whole library of games I have to alternate between driver versions.

  • How are you doing financially?
  • I am one broken leg away from being homeless and losing everything, and it's been like that my entire working life. I've never been able to make enough to actually save. Currently I have -100 in the bank and some debt I'm trying to pay off on top of that. My rent is literally half my income.

  • Ryujinx Switch Emulator Removed After Nintendo’s Request
  • It's not "retro gaming" but that doesn't make emulating switch games a bad thing. I dump and emulate my own switch games off my own switch because they tend to perform better via emulator on a PC. It's really unfortunate to see Nintendo shut down what ultimately is the best way for us to preserve switch games long-term.

  • Anon plays Persona 5
  • I think you'll miss out on a lot of great games thinking that way! Sometimes needing to commit time into a game is where a lot of the value comes from in its experience, and persona is one of those series.

  • 'We can't do computer graphics anymore without artificial intelligence. We compute one pixel, we infer the other 32': Jensen thinks AI is integral to next-gen graphics tech
  • Perhaps, we should be more concerned with maintaining and keeping relevant current hardware, over constant production of more powerful hardware just for the sake of doing it. We've hit a point of diminishing returns in terms of the value we're actually being given by each new generation. Even the PS4 and Xbox One were able to produce gorgeous graphics.

  • Amazon Bans Its Drivers From Moving Their Own Lips Too Much At Work [Update]
  • Amazon requires a camera system called a netradyne driveri in all vans - that's what they're referring to. It uses AI to monitor what you're doing and automatically send reports when it thinks you've done something wrong.

  • Drivers Hate The Tech In Their Cars
  • I drive an EV for work, any my biggest gripe is the touchscreen. What is wrong with buttons. Why must everything be hidden behind a menu I have to navigate on a touchscreen. It feels less safe, frankly. In my own car I have muscle memory for each button and can do things like skip songs or adjust the AC without looking away from the road... But in the EV I can't.

  • 405 Freeway: Gaza protesters block traffic in West Los Angeles
  • Not everyone can just ship themselves off to DC and like, shut down infrastructure. Let alone travel internationally. Being in a financial position where you can do that is an incredibly privileged position to be in. We have to do what we can, where we are to make change - and for people living in LA that means protesting in LA. A lot of protesting IS about visibility, and doing it so you can be noticed is far from pointless! Blocking traffic anywhere in this country is directly making sure that you and your message cannot be ignored.

  • Can someone explain why so many people here are FOR blocking Threads.net on a server level?
  • I went to fedi to avoid big corporations and what they've done with social media. Why would I want their platform having access to my posts? I don't trust meta or any of the other big tech companies. In fact, the main mastodon instance I use blocks threads entirely and that's one of the reasons I joined it.
