What Major Social Media Platforms Would You Like To See Federated Alternatives To That Don't Exist Yet? - Lemmy
  • I miss being able to just see updates from my friends when going on Facebook instead of millions of suggested posts and ads

  • Can you ask your GP to scratch the inside of your ear?
  • I get that exact same feeling from the eczema I get in my ears. Some steroid drops usually clear it right up

  • What really popular movie or TV show have you never seen?
  • I watched the first season but couldn’t bring myself to watch the second. I just got the ick too much from it to have any enthusiasm to finish it

  • Is there a way to make objects stop teleporting from my hands?
  • The best thing I did for myself is to make a place for all important things like my keys, watch, medicine, moisturiser etc. if I catch myself putting it down somewhere that isn’t the right place then I make the effort to put it in the right spot. For example: my keys, they have a hook by my door and one pocket they live in. They are never anywhere but those two places or in my hand and if I ever go to put them down and think to myself “Ill remember to move them later” I say to myself “of course you won’t remember, move them now”.

It’s helped massively and now I’m used to it it’s not hard to do. Of course I don’t always catch myself and do lose stuff but it happens less now.

Also trying to keep on top of clutter on sides, that way it’s easier to spot the thing that I’ve put down. Don’t get me wrong I have piles and piles of clutter that I will about once a year go through and have a clear out but I keep that stuff on shelves etc, not somewhere I would put down my phone for example

  • Lemmings who quit smoking and/or vaping, how was your quitting journey like?
  • That’s interesting. I actually did something like this for the month or two before I quit fully. I just started to pay attention to the routine cigarettes and cut some of them out if I had had one recently. Then when I fully quit, I just said to myself “it’s cold outside and it’s warm in here” and that was that. I had one more after about 24hrs and that was the last one I ever had. It’s been over 4 years now

  • South Korea passes ban on dog meat consumption
  • Me and my partner do this. We often eat vegan food but if we add a bit of cheese it doesn’t matter. We’ve still consumed way less meat and dairy than we would have a few years ago

  • Are there any good free alternatives to brilliant.org?
  • I used brilliant for a while to see what it was like and tbh if you have the time to use it regularly and the money to spend, I thought it was worth it. I just don’t have the time to make it worthwhile right now.

I learnt a lot in a short space of time and it kept my attention well, which can be difficult given I have adhd.

I’m sure there are better, more in depth, apps or websites somewhere but I found the game like interface to be much better for me and much more interesting

  • Do you first develop the abillity to read body language, or do you first learn how to speak?
  • I work in early years. Yes babies have a great understanding of body language and facial expression long before they can talk to communicate.

Young children are actually far more intelligent than most people give them credit for. Just because they can’t communicate it the same language as us yet doesn’t mean they don’t know what they’re doing.

If they didn’t understand body language, how would they bond with people? And people bond back with them? Not to be insulting, but it’s like with pets. We can build bonds with them because we learnt to understand each others body language even though we don’t speak the same language

  • What chemicals and tools do I need to clean my bathroom?
  • I’m in the U.K. and most people use bleach to clean their toilet and that’s it

  • What are some items that really aren't worth paying the expensive version for?
  • I agree, I’ve got a large dog and he can demolish cheap toys within hours but the good quality ones will last months

  • What are some items that really aren't worth paying the expensive version for?
  • I have to disagree here. Some brands of mascara (especially the cheap ones but some of the expensive too) have chemicals in that are terrible for your health in the long term. It’s been a long time since I read the research but I remember that it caused local issues like cysts in/on the eye but also global issues like hormone imbalance

Edit: I found a recent link and it looks like there’s less company’s using them than when I first learnt of this. The health issues this article mentions are birth defects, thyroid issues and cancer. https://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/makeup-urban-decay-cancer-linked-forever-chemicals-b2261555.html

  • How to stop eating junk food?
  • It’s actually incredibly common. Think about all the people who bite on the end of their pen or always have a drink (like a water bottle or coffee) to hand

  • Lemmings without bidet: how do you deal with your period?
  • Okay, I’m a bit concerned at this whole thing.

When I’m on then I shower once a day. I use femfresh to wash and then towel dry.

Why would I need anything else in between? Most disposable products need changing every 4hrs but that doesn’t mean throughly cleaning between uses. Reusables vary but again nothing needs deep cleaning under than 12hrs.

I feel like I’m misunderstanding the question?

  • Lemmy users where falsely accused of plagiarism, how did it happen ?
  • College, my second year. The software they used flagged my work as something like 90% plagiarised. Thankfully the software showed the user it was saying it was plagiarised from… which was me from my first year lol. It was quickly sorted out and no lasting issue thankfully but when I first saw that percentage I freaked out

  • If there was ever a sign that I might have ADHD...
  • See I got: “that behaviour is normal, I do that” and how do you politely tell a 60yr that that means they probably also have adhd….. I mean she took it well when I started pointing it out after I was diagnosed but literally all she said for years is “well I do that”

  • Is it just my circle, or has it been a challenge getting into the Christmas/holiday spirit the last couple of years?
  • This year has been bad in my area. The cost of living crisis, lots of illness sweeping through, general stress, it’s all meant that no one has really had the Christmas spirit this year. And I’m not talking gifts or anything like that. I’m talking about having hot chocolate, wearing pjs, admiring other people’s decorations.

We’ve all commented that we haven’t been feeling it, and no one can pinpoint why exactly, but I think there’s just too many bad/stressful things going on for people to have the emotional resources left to be positive

  • I got this popup ad on my TV **while watching a DVD**
  • I use a Roku as well and never have this happen so I dunno

  • What is everyone's holiday plans?
  • Probably have a few drinks and play PlayStation tbh. Not very exciting but, more importantly, not very expensive

  • What is Something Scientific that you just don't believe in at all?
  • My mum has a severe bad back and she had to go on a fortnight physio retreat thing. There were a couple of people there that had a mild back problem, went to a chiropractor and ended up with severe chronic pain. Ill never forget that and have never been to one because I don’t see it as worth the risk
