  • The purpose of a system is what it does, so too with it's intellectuals.

  • Gonna say, Stanley doesn't impress me with his work. I read 'How Fascism Works' and it's pretty typical liberal fash apologia; focussing solely on the cultural flashpoints the fascists like to use to gain power and barely if ever addresses the material interests bound up in fascist states and how the rich business class props them up. After having read it I found Blackshirts and Reds to be all but a direct counter argument to basically everything he says and properly addresses the most important question about fascist states: for whom does the state benefit? Parenti never shies away from explaining that they only gain power because they have rich sponsors who want for state power and how it contrasts so much with Socialism which puts the proletariat first and foremost. Indeed, Stanley never properly goes into any of the class dynamics at play when it comes to the levers of power.

  • I think it's still my favorite out of the series, even if only because there's this intangible spirit of possibility in the setting, until the sequels took a more concrete tongue in cheek tone. It has this compelling balance of darkness and humor that appeals to me, before it became mostly jokes with an internet meme appeal, even if I share the mainstream opinion that -strictly speaking- the series gameplay has only improved.

  • Didn't he have to personally get involved in getting firefighters their compensation for having helped in 9/11? You'd think he'd know better wrt labour rights in the US.

  • I remember the Saboteur, it was part of that period where if you bought the game firsthand it came with a 1 time use code unlocking certain content, to deter secondhand purchases. The content for the Saboteur was uncensored titties in the burlesque shows you could visit lmfao.

I'll bring up Alpha Protocol, the janky secret agent rpg, it wasn't particularily good, but I remember playing it.

  • That period between 2002-2006ish when everybody was flexing their best water shaders, I figure many games chose a tropical island theme to show off their new tech, made for a memorable vibe

  • This especially, with regards to how Hexbear often criticizes Breadtubers or whomever, seem to expect these creators to drop everything and start making hyper-specific reviews of obscure theory or something that'll accrue generously 1k views and be absorbed by absolutely nobody. Unfortunately I think Social media isn't going to serve the cause in any meaningful way since it's largely devoted by their owners to avoid that kind of thing, since people click on the digestible videos that interest them.

  • The eternal problem of FPTTP voting, of which Canada suffers, is nobody has anything to vote FOR, only against. Thus why Poilievre is gonna be the next PM, not cause people love him or the conservatives, really, they're just the opposition party so people will vote for them to punish the Liberals but ofc, due to FPTTP, this just results in a sort of seesaw elections where people vote whatever the opposition of the time happens to be.

  • Watched this a few days ago, was a compelling story

  • I've heard it called the "millenial woop music" and it has never left my mind ever since. Just groans and moans over the most saccarine 4 chords.

  • Does the events in Syria count as "low scale border conflict erupts" space? Feels like up until like a month ago Syria was pretty calm, probably doesn't count for border conflict really unless you get into the weeds of who's supporting whom.

Likewise theres been a few natural disasters like Plinky said. Sheesh the bottom left corner was logshots lol

  • Counterpoint: we shouldn't concern ourselves with those types, and in fact infuriating the treatlerite shopper who would be so mad is more constructive than letting them experience their consumerist bliss, I think

  • I dunno, those little Z's on the tiny missiles and minarets? I see where you're coming from but I feel like AI wouldn't have figured that out, there's too much authorial intent here. I don't detect enough nonsense blob for me to think that, but maybe they generated the original then fixed it in photoshop.

  • Jesus, mods really power-tripping still, hate to see it.
