Google rolls out new lens controls to older Pixel phones
  • It's live on my Pixel Fold. UK here.

Not really sure I see the point in the lens controls. Does it change the way the pictures are processed, or does it just remove the ability to "zoom" between the lenses?

  • Season 1 (Series 14) Episode 5: "Dot and Bubble"
  • Maybe the dots had grown to hate the inhabitants of Finetown so much that they just enjoyed watching them get eaten by slugs. I mean sure they could just headbutt them to death...but which is funnier?

After the end of the episode I can totally understand that point of view.

  • Are there apps that mimic notification leds on amoled screens?
  • I used to use this one...but for some reason I just never found any of the settings made it as noticeable and useful as an actual notification LED so I just switched to using an always on display.

I too miss notification LEDs...yet another thing sacrificed to the alter of bezelless design.

  • How do you clean your razor?
  • This. Once a week I leave the razor to soak briefly in hot soapy water while I give my brush a bit of a clean, then I come back to it and give it a once over with a toothbrush. It's shiny and clean and ready for the week ahead.

  • I need to replace milk in my coffee and I need ideas
  • Another vote from me for out and almond milk. If you do any kind of milk steaming or latte art then oat is great for that...and I just like the flavour of almond milk. It's really nice with breakfast cereals too as it adds a nice nutty flavour to everything.

There is nothing wrong with Soy milk, but with coffee you have to be careful you don't curdle it due to the high temperature.

  • SPOILERS - Doctor Who: The Giggle
  • That strange sense of weirdness and confusion is probably the closest I'll ever get to the feeling viewers in the '60s must have had watching William Hartnell regenerate into Patrick Troughton.

  • A UK TV Show with a scene playing on Zhuang Zhou's Butterfly Dream...?
  • Ha ha, it definitely has a Spaced feel, but I'm a fan of the show and know it pretty much inside out...so it's not spaced. I think it was a bit earlier in the 90s than Spaced, maybe around 94-96...but I can't be certain.

  • A UK TV Show with a scene playing on Zhuang Zhou's Butterfly Dream...?
  • Annoyingly I can't really remember much about the actors. They were both male, and I think both white. I think the lead character was mid-twenties to mid-thirties, with the boss being older, around middle age. Not much to go on, I know.

  • A UK TV Show with a scene playing on Zhuang Zhou's Butterfly Dream...?

Every few years I try to track something down that I half remember seeing on TV in the 1990s, but I have so far had no luck finding it as I don't have much to go on. I think it was a UK made for TV production, either an episode of a TV show, or maybe a one off TV movie.

The scene I remember features the lead character in an office with his boss. The tone is generally surreal and dreamlike. The office is white and there is a big window. As part of the scene his boss tells him about the famous Chinese story of Zhuang Zhou's Butterfly Dream:

"Once, Zhuang Zhou dreamed he was a butterfly, a butterfly flitting and fluttering about, happy with himself and doing as he pleased. He didn't know that he was Zhuang Zhou.

Suddenly he woke up and there he was, solid and unmistakable Zhuang Zhou. But he didn't know if he was Zhuang Zhou who had dreamt he was a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming that he was Zhuang Zhou."

I can't remember if this is all in one scene, or maybe two scenes spread across the story. Either at the end of the scene, or towards the end of the story the main character finds a matchbox on his bosses desk with a fluttering sound coming from it. His boss is nowhere to be seen. He picks up the box, listens to it, and then opens it. A butterfly flies out of the box and out the window.

This has been driving me nuts for years. Was it a weird film/TV show? A comedy sketch? An illustrative part of a documentary? An advert?

If anyone has any ideas or pointers, please let me know.

Wilfa Uniform - Sounds like it's struggling after recent clean.
  • When cleaning I unscrew the top section and use the provided brush to clean the burrs and push any grounds out into the collection bin. I did wipe the part where the two sections meet with a dry paper towel as there were a few grounds, so I may have removed some of the lubrication.

  • Wilfa Uniform - Sounds like it's struggling after recent clean.

Looking for some troubleshooting advice. I've had to spend a lot of time away from home lately so haven't been taking as good care of my Wilfa Uniform grinder as much as I usually do, so I gave it a rather thorough clean at the weekend after months of just letting it build up.

On Monday I noticed that when grinding it sounds like it's struggling; as if there's a bean in there that's catching and throwing things off every second or so, even when there are no beans in there. It's not a motor whine or anything like that; the only way I can describe it is it sounds like it's grinding on empty, and then suddenly coming into contact with something every now and then. I've opened it up and cleaned it out again and there's no signs of a anything obstructing the burrs, and no sign of damage. It still seems to be grinding fine, but the sound is pretty worrying.

I think I might have accidentally cleaned off some of the lubricant on the ball bearings, but this is purely just a guess. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!

A video doorbell with meaningful phone notifications?
  • Sounds interesting; I'll look into it. When you say we would "need an additional Unifi device in your network" do you mean something like the box that comes with Eufy, or something more complex. I emphasise that our "network" currently is a handful of smart bulbs and our phones; we are not looking to get into a full smart home setup.

  • A video doorbell with meaningful phone notifications?

My house doesn't currently have a doorbell of any form (100+ year old house, I guess no one ever installed one along the way), and lately we've been suffering a bit of antisocial behaviour so I've been looking into getting a smart doorbell.

Despite both my wife and I being tech literate people the only smart home devices we have are a few smart bulbs which we control through our phones (both Android and Apple).

Given that we don't have, and are not interested in getting a smart speaker or hub, are there any video doorbells that send meaningful notifications to your phone?

So far Google Nest Battery Doorbell looks like it would be the best all rounder for our needs, but it seems that it just sends a regular notification to phone that would be stupidly easy to miss. I also looked into Eufy and found contradicting things about how phone notifications are handled.

Ideally I'd want to get a ringing phone notification that wakes the phone and displays the camera interface, like a phone call, that way it would get immediatly noticed and not just lost amongst other regular notifications. I can easily set a different notification sound...but that isn't much help as my phone is always set to vibrate mode.

It sounds like Ring doorbells have the style of notification I'm looking for, but they seem to have an awful reputation and we'd like to avoid a subscription if possible.

Is there anything that fits my admittedly limiting criteria?

Thanks in advance for any tips, help, and advice : )

Classic Doctor Who story The Celestial Toymaker 'to get animated restoration'
  • I hope they hired Dinopuff who made the CGI animation of episode 1 on YouTube. It was phenomenal! A few rough edges here and there but the storytelling and direction were inspired. I'd love to see what they could do with a budget!

  • Hario Switch Recipes?
  • I quite like this one from the Coffee Chronicler. It's heavily inspired by Tetsu's recipe but cuts out the temperature drop and makes it easier for those mornings when you want to make good coffee when you're still half asleep.

    https://youtu.be/68ZOXrXbVHc?si=euLieqh-lCDSdMUF

It's 20g of coffee, 160g of water with the switch open, let it drain until 45 seconds, close he switch, add another 160g of water, let it steep until the 2 minutes mark, open the switch and let it drain.

It's not as smoot and sweet as Tetsu's, but it's still a great and easy recipe I use often. I hope you enjoy! Looking forward to seeing what other recipes are posted.
