It's a new defense mission. You have to keep some equipment safe while it launches rockets. Enemies come in from the edges and there are some built in emplacements and walls to help keep them out.

Yeah, but not in a very important way. Mainly just that Olimar discovered the planet in the first game then goes back in 2 to find treasure. Goes back again and gets lost which is the plot of both 3 and 4 where you play as rescuers.
