The diminishing returns of in-office mandates
  • So they've failed at pushing full return to office and now they're commissioning unscientific studies to try to make hybrid seem necessary?

These results really can't be applied to all jobs. Some jobs obviously require in-person but many white collar jobs can be done entirely remotely saving workers time, money and freeing up infrastructure for those that need/want to go in. Not to mention other benefits to mental health and reduction of emissions involved in commuting.

  • Britain's Sunak cites growing up without Sky TV as example of hardship
  • Oh yeah agree, he has the reverse Midas touch at the mo. Might add it coincided with the media flipping sides when they saw it was a foregone conclusion.

  • Britain's Sunak cites growing up without Sky TV as example of hardship
  • One of the admittedly minor things I dislike about his tetchy interview answers is when he starts going "blah blah blah...that's why we've done things such as..." and then proceeds to list the one and only example of said thing.

  • Well-Known Anti-Gay “Conversion” Therapist Comes Out As Gay
  • I have somewhat of a pet extension to projection theory... Many people who are anti-gay think that it is a choice as they themselves have made that choice. ie. They are repressed bisexual/gay.

Completely unsubstantiated with no evidence but I find it fun to think about as it would explain their complete misunderstanding of it not being a choice. "I made the tough choice and am living with it, why can't they?!"

  • Lost in translation
  • Completely agree, requirements are key and often badly defined due to the customers' lack of knowledge of the intricacies of the system. You are correct to ask for clarity or it could come back to bite you later on.

I've just had a spec through from a BA which consists entirely of screenshots of an existing system with no technical definitition of any of the requested fields so relate to this right now.

  • French conservatives move toward far-right alliance
  • We are just recovering from a similar situation here but the Overton window has shifted so far the supposed left-wing workers' party now look like centre-right conservatives.

  • French conservatives move toward far-right alliance
  • Right on cue, the descent into fascism begins ahead of the impending climate disasters.

It's so depressing to see France like this, I always held it up as a prominent antifa nation.

  • The experience that made me hate programming, but that's all on me
  • Not substantially, it had a different title and was toned down.

I withdraw the word essay and apologise for any rudeness.

    Have a good one.

  • The experience that made me hate programming, but that's all on me
  • My original message was "Wow ok chill." then elaborated to clarify.

Where I'm from people are way ruder than anything I said here so perhaps I misjudged the room. However, calling it out seems to have had the desired response as since posting OP went and apologised for his anger.

I in turn apologise for my rudeness to them.

  • The experience that made me hate programming, but that's all on me
  • Did you read it before the edits? If it's written like that I think I'm entitled to exaggerate back slightly to make a point by calling it a rage essay.

Anywho I wouldn't choose to rant like this to my coworkers or online. A quick 🤦 in chat usually does the trick.

  • The experience that made me hate programming, but that's all on me
  • Completely put to task, yep really got me there. I will never see the world in the same way again.

Also, I don't think you understand what irony means.

    You too.

  • Wow ok chill.

The title of this post was "I hate programming, why did I choose this field".

I responded suggesting maybe OP isn't suited to SQL in particular. There are plenty of other languages to learn that they might pick up quicker if they are struggling with SELECTs.

  • The experience that made me hate programming, but that's all on me
  • It's partially right but led OP down the wrong lines of thinking because it interpreted the prompt as a date field being missing rather than the field named date being missing.

Tbh I don't blame it too much here as there is kind of a base level of understanding requred to use it successfully.

  • The experience that made me hate programming, but that's all on me
  • Ah yes here you are successfully ignoring it.

Might not be encouraging it but you seem to be defending it.

  • The experience that made me hate programming, but that's all on me
  • It made an incorrect inference, imagine how wrong it is on more complex questions.

  • The experience that made me hate programming, but that's all on me
  • There's a difference between ranting to your coworkers at lunch about a stupid mistake and typing out a full rage essay.

Imagine the state of the sub if we all did that... Wait...

  • The experience that made me hate programming, but that's all on me
  • Fair play. SQL is pretty different from traditional programming and errors often aren't very descriptive.

You'll need to get very familiar with fields you have included or not in your queries when using more advanced stuff like group functions as including or excluding them can alter the number of rows returned.

  • The experience that made me hate programming, but that's all on me
  • Perhaps, but we don't know and therein lies the problem.

  • Is there a way to downvote via swipe actions?

I've bounced between Lemmy apps and have found Connect to be the best so far. I particularly like the swipe actions as they free up screen space for content.

However I cannot find a way to downvote via swiping. Is the feature not available at present or is it hidden away somewhere in the settings?

New study finds we're on course for 10°C warming at current rates

This factors in some feedback loops which most sudies to date have ignored. Note, that it excludes extra warming caused by all the additional water vapour in the air.

For context, studies suggest that the largest extinction event in Earth's history (so far), the Late Permian Extinction Event, saw temperature rises of around 8°C.

Starfield accessories arrived, thanks Microsoft Rewards!

The Starfield preview got me hyped enough to finally cash in a big chunk of my points that I've been accumulating since the Series X was released.

If anyone doesn't use Microsoft Rewards I strongly recommend signing up. It doesn't take much effort to build them up.

They are slowly nerfing the program so might as well take advantage while it lasts.
