Is an unknown supervisor password for ThinkPad bios an issue if I've already installed linux?

I purchased a second hand ThinkPad from an ebay outlet. When it arrived I wiped windows 10 from it and installed ubuntu with no issues. It runs perfect without any weird fixes needed. However, after just checking the bios to see if I could change some settings, I realised it has a supervisor password.

I contacted the seller and they gave me a few to try but they haven’t worked.

They said their tech will be back next week and will contact me then but I may have to send it back.

My question is, will this be an issue in the future? Or does it depend on which settings are locked?

I don’t really want to send it back unless it’s critical, as I have a lot of work to do and my previous laptop is moments away from death.

Avelon 1.0.7 out now - adds text selection, tweaks to the free tier, new pro features and lots of QOL improvements
  • Unfortunately still have the accessibility issue with the default dark theme.

I have light sensitivity issues, and the contrast between text and background on the default dark theme is too high. So in lower light (but not completely black) environments, the light theme is too light, and the dark theme too dark for myself. The “Calm Night” and “Ocean Depths” themes are so much better and do not cause the same issues.

As this is should be an accessibility feature, much like font size, there should be an alternative dark theme available in the free tier. Without one, the app is extremely difficult to use when in darker environments, for people like myself.

I would like to say however, I understand theming and other, non-essential features being a premium option. Let’s be real, you deserve to be paid for your hard work.

  • It can be frustrating to see, but they have a tonne going on biologically. I’ve had a bunch of friends, nieces & nephews that have all been horrible when teenagers, then grow up to be fantastic, kind people.

  • [Accessibility Feature Request] Alternative dark/light mode colours.

I have a light sensitivity problem with my eyes, so I find screens easiest to view when matching dark/light mode with my surroundings (night or day respectively).

This works fine in theory, but with some apps the dark mode is very black. This makes the white text uncomfortable to read and can lead to an afterimage when reading in a low-light (but not extremely dark) environment.

Alternative dark/light themes, such as OKSolar (https://meat.io/oksolar) can help with this a lot. Or even just a toggle that enables a slightly less black dark mode.

Hopefully there’s some plans to implement something like this, as I know it can impact a decent amount of people.

  • Piggybacking this post to say a “disable nsfw” toggle would be great too.
