  • Its not that I like them but that I think as far as phones go, they provide the best out-of-box-experience in terms of security and privacy that also encompasses health/fitness and home automation. Just be sure to turn on Advanced Data Protection and check all permissions/settings.

Granted I don’t use their computers where I prefer something reasonably repairable, upgradable, and that can run Linux without much fuss.

  • Anybody using a framework laptop?
  • You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help.

  • Anybody using a framework laptop?
  • I love mine I've had it over 2 years. It was a first-gen DIY Framework 13 and I ran into a faulty fan early on. I worked with their tech support and they sent a replacement fan under warranty. Took 5 minutes to put it in and all parts inside have QR codes that take you to the marketplace for replacements and repair instructions.

They do have official Linux support for Ubuntu and Fedora. I can attest to Linux Mint working well on it although I don't use the fingerprint reader, which I've read has some issues on some distros.

As for upgradability, I've not needed to yet but you can just order a new motherboard and any other parts off their marketplace and drop it straight in. Should take around 20 minutes or so. I suspect this would take longer on the 16 since it is more complex.

Also, here is a link to the marketplace if you want to browse the parts. I think you could build one from scratch from here, but I think it would cost more that way. https://frame.work/marketplace

  • Has anyone found a bluetooth carplay adapter that actually survives?
  • I'm aware of what CarPlay is. I use it in my aftermarket car stereo.

  • Has anyone found a bluetooth carplay adapter that actually survives?
  • I just got to thinking... by "interface to the car itself" did you mean stuff like Bluetooth phone, steering wheel buttons, and backup cameras or is it more in-depth stuff like car settings and monitoring? I know the phone calls, steering wheel buttons, and backup cameras can be tied to aftermarket stereos. I'm not sure if they have figured out anything more yet or not.

  • I found this that supposedly fits your car and does wireless CarPlay, but unfortunately the cost and interface with the car itself is still going to be a problem. I do wish modern cars left the car interface, A/C controls, and stereo separate. This along with privacy concerns and reluctance to spend on a new car is what keeps me driving very old stuff.

  • Has anyone found a bluetooth carplay adapter that actually survives?
  • It may not be possible with a car that new depending on if the stereo does other things than just audio, but you may want to consider an aftermarket Pioneer, Kenwood, etc. Our car is so old that it's stereo did nothing but audio so replacing it was easy, but yours might be more difficult. You could always check with a car stereo shop and see if it is possible with your car.

  • What laptop do you use/recommend?
  • I'll second the Framework. I've had one since the 1st gen Framework 13 and love it.

  • Open Source Money App?
  • I'm not sure if it will suit your needs, but I love Eqonomize!. I can use it from any of my computers by putting its data file on my NAS.

    Edit: forgot the URL... https://eqonomize.github.io/

  • Debian for Linux gaming?
  • I'll second Mint as well. I play mostly small indie games but have played Cyberpunk 2077, Far Cry 5, and Terminator: Resistance with no problems. The worst I've experienced is having to tell Steam to use a different version of Proton for some games (I recently had trouble launching Cyberpunk on Proton Experimental so I downgraded to the next most recent and it worked fine). I also have an AMD GPU so no driver mess.

  • Just chiming in to say that as a Windows 11, FireFox, and Bitwarden user, I’ve not seen any of these issues except the occasional welcome screen. I believe the welcome screen comes up after certain updates to introduce new features and settings.

  • What do you do when a great book has an absolutely uninteresting storyline?
  • I had this problem with House of Leaves. The narrator components felt unnecessary, but I didn’t want to read only part of a book. The Navidson Record parts were fortunately compelling enough to pull me through the rest kicking and screaming. I ended up loving it and the narrator sections finally started to pay off to an extent.
