Ahhh, gotcha. Well, maybe you're on to something there.
Yes, but after he'd already done as much damage as he could, not when he received a personal invitation.
It's still going on today. I remember when McCain (I think it was McCain, which is weird because I also seem to remember that he had a good, or at least better, relationship with the tribes) swapped some res land that included a sacred site for some other random land because a copper mining operation wanted that land. He slid it into a defense bill or something. Then, he had the absolute audacity to show up later on the campaign trail, and got ran off with prejudice. Fuck around, find out, dickhead. If only more of them got that kind of treatment.
I mean, he was right. Peeking at the history of the 1970s energy crises, it looks like it was the right medicine at the right time. I think maybe the problem was threefold:
- Asking Americans to be uncomfortable. By this point, I'm sure it was already a preposterous proposition, especially to boomers, who were the first generation that grew up with mainstream car culture. They also grew up accustomed to a very high standard of living compared to their predecessors.
- It looks like the energy crisis only continued to worsen as the US went into the election. That probably didn't help. I'm not sure how much of that was the result of Carter's actions here, but I'm guessing that this speech left him very little room to displace responsibility.
- Too much too fast. Especially given that there'd already been an energy crisis before his presidency, it seems like it would have been prudent to start working towards some of these goals well in advance of crunch time. By the time 1978 rolled around, he was (we were) already under the gun.
Would you agree that's accurate?
I don't think I take your meaning
That's one take. I don't think it's wrong, necessarily, but I watched that debate on YouTube. I agree with Carter, I would have voted for Carter, but Reagan completely wiped the floor with him in terms of communicating to the audience. Carter got up there and gave a lecture, Reagan got up there and sold everybody on a cool new pack of cigarettes.
I hate that Reagan is supposed to be the benchmark here. That motherfucker set us on this path all those years ago by abandoning the great society view; there's so much that's fucked in the US today that can be traced back to him. The only thing I'll ever give him good credit for is his opposition to nuclear weapons.
I mean, I can't blame people for being exhausted with taxes and everything. Wages have been mostly stagnant for fifty years, while everything is getting relentlessly monetized and the cost of living keeps spiraling out of control. I get why people could feel less than excited about ratcheting up the cost of living more. I just wish people thought a little bit past that first step of "it'll cost me more money right now?! No way!"
Well, if you ask firefighters if firefighting should be privatized, you'll usually get a "lmao NO!" And also a "but that's different!" And that's the escape hatch of every conservative ever. They think that everything they believe applies to everything else but themselves. Every other government service except the fire service is corrupt, wasteful, and backwards. They don't believe that the fascists could ever possibly be talking about them, because they know that what they're doing is actually important.
Yeah, seen my share of people getting their faces blown off and basically rationalizing it away because it was Trump that did it. "If you think about it, it's somehow Obama's fault". There's probably a good many reasons for this, and I think one of the big ones is that nobody likes accepting that they got suckered.
Me too. We've got a pretty good department here, and I hope we can keep it that way.
"Illegal" Navajo-man??????????
Wealthy protestant cis white male.
There really is no limit to refining the in-group, because at the end of the day, every conservative imagines themselves as the very center of the in group.
Sound advice. I know that after a bunch of locals voiced concern about it, our chief said that they are absolutely not working with ICE, and their duty is to serving the whole community first and foremost.
They more than likely were with ICE. The agency has massively and rapidly expanded its enforcement personnel, and has done so in a haphazard way that has (deliberately) not given them an opportunity to properly train personnel up on procedures and rules and stuff. Nobody who wants to do good in the world is going to work for ICE right now. So, they've basically just done a presto gestapo, and a lot of times these guys really are just out there doing the sloppiest, shittiest, and most bully-like law enforcement you could possibly conceive of. I know where I'm posting this, I know what we all generally think of cops here, the current state of ice is about ten rungs down from that. We're talking real amateur hour shit, and they'll get away with it if people let them.
The good news is that apparently none of these fucking jokers seem to know or care how to cross t's and dot i's. You absolutely can send them packing, just like these folks did, and if they don't leave, then call your local sheriff's office or police dept. This is really dependent on your area, metro PD tend to be stocked full of major league assholes, but my local PD is actually pretty chill and has a good working relationship with the community; in my experience, sheriff's deputies tend to be people who got into law enforcement because they're true believers in the ideals of law enforcement (protecting life and property, accountability, etc) and constitutional justice, not because they want to flex on minorities. YMMV.
But if you think you can trust one of your local law enforcement agencies, absolutely call up 911 and tell them that you've got some people here that are trespassing (they've been told to leave and aren't), seem to be impersonating law enforcement (since they won't provide proof of ID), and you're worried that they're trying to kidnap someone, that you think these people are an imminent threat to your life or someone else's. That'll generally get the cops out there in a hurry, and they will likely be not very happy at all that ICE is out here putting on a fucking circus. That, or the agents will hear you and fucking split so that they don't get clowned on by local law enforcement. There have been plenty of instances of federal agents getting arrested while fucking around; mind you, they're almost never charged, but nobody walks away from that particularly happy.
Behold, the power of "No."
I love to see it.
Do not make the mistake of taking fascists at their word. They're lying to you; like when they talk about being very concerned about the budget, but then turn around and blow money out of their ass to all of their pals and donors and on special vanity projects that benefit nobody. They're bullshitters, almost all of them; you can tell the true believers, like Lindell, because they're the ones that get thrown under the bus. They know the election wasn't stolen, they just hope that you'll take their bullshit in good faith.
Thank you, Ted Neeley
Holy smokes, how did I not think to turn the temperature down?! That's smart! Thanks for getting back to me!
Idk, homie. I'm constantly turning between "progress takes time" and "we don't have time". You've probably recently seen the meme I just plagiarized. I'm in local office now, making a plan to run for a higher local office to try and make things better however I can. I'm working with local activist groups to push the city to make things better. I'd launch the revolution if I could, but I haven't been able to find it. I'm trying to do whatever I can.
Yep, RIP
