  • We just recently purchased Mail Assure with Cove Data Protection from N-able to achieve a similar goal, but unfortunately I don't have any experience with it yet to advise if it is any good. It is an option though.

  • Dell offers no OS laptops and desktops but sadly only for business customers. Consumers have to buy the Windows adware. You sometimes see the enterprise stuff for sale second hand with no OS too. The only specific laptop I know that consumers can buy with no OS is the Framework Laptop, which looks awesome.

  • Thanks for the reply! After I wrote that I had another look at the context in which you posted your comment and realized I had misunderstood your meaning. That was why I deleted it. I can definitely appreciate that a very large instance will have higher operating costs and that people shouldn't be mooches. Cheers!

  • Out of curiosity, what's your definition of self hoster? I self host on Raspberry Pi and an Odroid H3+, but also have a couple VPS where I "self host" other things like my Lemmy instance I am commenting from. I'm not saying you're wrong, I just wonder about the reasoning behind your statement. My thinking about what is and is not "self hosted" might be way off base.

  • I know this isn't fuck bad parking...
  • I agree with you wholeheartedly! I just moved into this town a year ago and there is a lot of room for improvement, but also some good to be said about some of the local planners. I really need to get more involved.

  • Printer recommendations (home colour laser).
  • Agreed. Cost per page is way lower if you compare genuine consumables. It's around $.002 for ink tanks and easily $.02+ with most color laser printers these days until you get into around the $600 range. Even with knock off toner ink tank printers are more affordable. Just be sure to print to them regularly so they don't clog up.

  • I know this isn't fuck bad parking...
  • The thought crosses my mind, but I wouldn't do that. What I do always try to make a point to do is walk on the sidewalk side, even if it's really tight so that hopefully they will notice someone is uncomfortably close to their precious car/trailer/camper. Hopefully they will think it's going to get scratched and leave more room next time.

  • I know this isn't fuck bad parking...
  • Yes, they can easily park 3 or more feet out toward the road. It's like they park this way to protect their precious car by leaving it farther from the road, but it screws over pedestrians. As far as utility trailers and campers blocking the full width of the sidewalk, they don't belong there at all, and since they are only there sometimes I can only assume that yes, they have somewhere better to park.

Edit: 3 feet is about 1 meter for folks using sensible measurement units.

  • I know this isn't fuck bad parking...

...but surely this is something most of us hate to see. I walk on this street near where I work a couple times per day. Granted, the sidewalk isn't much to speak of, but cars park like this all the time. Sometimes people park utility trailers or campers covering the entire sidewalk. If I see someone doing it I will let them know they should leave at least enough room so someone in a wheelchair wouldn't have to go out in the road, and this has been fairly effective, but for most this seems to be acceptable behavior around here.

  • I can't say that I agree with you as far as the Apple stuff, but as a long time Gnome user, I agree with you 100% about Gnome. I loved Gnome 2, but even after all these years Gnome 3 has not grown on me. I'm actually running it on my main desktop PC right now so it's not for lack of trying. Maybe I'm just a dinosaur but I'd take some Gnome 2 with Compiz over this mess of a desktop environment even still.

  • Moving external DNS server to VPS

I plan to move an external DNS server to a hosted VPS in the near future. I would appreciate advice on VPS specs for this purpose, or an other helpful feedback from others who have done this before. I've used a lot of low end boxes to host web services, and would like to do that with this project as well but don't want to under spec it. It will be used regularly by around 300 users.
