I know I should be concerned but I would like to know just **how** concerned I should be.

I would be concerned but tbh, living outside the US sometimes it takes weeks to replace drives for servers after a SMART event. We also have servers out of warranty with SMART failing HD that just refuse to die after a decade.

Wanting to get to 100TB usable

BB has 18TB WD externals that are supposedly white label Reds for 200USD a piece. 7 of those should be nice. That and more RAM.

What program do you use to check for bad sectors?

It is expected that some sectors fail over time. The HD is provision with extra space to account for this. The SMART threshold is what you should look at.
