Labour conference votes to reverse cut to winter fuel allowance in embarrassing blow to Starmer
  • No, I'm suggesting that any death will be announced as an attempt of the government to murder the elderly.

As it always has, and always will be.

  • Labour conference votes to reverse cut to winter fuel allowance in embarrassing blow to Starmer
  • It doesn't even have to be due to it. If a pensioner doesn't turn on their heating then its Labours fault even if the pensioner could have afforded it.

Or if the pensioner did have the heating on but it hadn't been serviced and they still died from the cold, you know the rags will spin it. Labour cuts fuel allowance and old dears die. Its not sketchy phrasing, its predictable Tory spin.

  • Ubisoft comes crawlin' back to Steam
  • So the problem is crappy guides?

I was of the opinion that anything that suggested the terminal was purely for speed reasons.

Average Windows guide. Click here, dismiss the warning, click here, click here, close the advert, click next, type in 1, accept, reboot.

Average Linux guide, go to Gnome Tweaks, third option, type in 1, no reboot required. Or open a terminal and paste the following command.

It's precise, it's concise, and it's fast but it's not required.

the are so many desktop environments

I completely disagree. There is Gnome with 70% of the market, KDE with 30%, and then various hacked together desktops with <1%. Guides should be set up for Gnome because you stick with defaults if you are that scared, maybe a reference for KDE, and if you chose something else then your already in copy/paste commands territory.

There was no part of me setting up SteamOS on my couch PC that required a terminal, which is what we are talking about here.

  • Ubisoft comes crawlin' back to Steam
  • Zero.

Steam doesn't require any terminal opening, the hard part are shitty Windows games that pop up boxes to install extra stuff because for some reason they can't install it when you install the game.

  • Ubisoft comes crawlin' back to Steam
  • I haven't been required to use the terminal for anything in years.

Honestly. I've been using Linux as my daily driver since the mid-2000's (Warty Warthog?), and the only times the terminal gets opened these days is through pure choice. Maybe 10 years ago I would agree with you.

  • Ubisoft comes crawlin' back to Steam
  • I'm running Linux for my couch based gaming and the experience is awesome. Much better than Windows ever was.

What makes you think that Linux is holding Linux back? The UI can be completely customised which makes Steam OS wonderful to use while Microsoft completely ban any customised interface out of the box.

Windows is only popular through inertia.

  • [The Spectator] Why is Labour so puritanical?
  • The only reason I mention Frarage was the rest of the language in that piece was a bit off.

Ed Davey is alright, he is fun yet also completely sincere.

  • [The Spectator] Why is Labour so puritanical?

  • Playstation Plus is just TOO expensive.
  • I had PS+ on the PS 3 & 4 when they moved to the new system.

I was grandfathered in and got the top tier for a lower tier price, and even then it was hard to justify.

I'm sticking to Steam for the most part these days, and using consoles for retro gaming. Excellent PS3 and early PS4 games can be picked up for cheap.

  • Ah, fuck I thought of that damn jump. I spent months trying to get over it, until someone found that it was small enough that you could walk over it.

  • Low Cost Mini PCs
  • Yeah, either that or for something that big I could get some USB 3.2 ports on a PCIe card.

I was just hoping for something a bit more compact and with high speed ports.

Old school Apple would have a load of high speed connectivity on the minis, but unfortunately it isn't what they do these days.

  • Low Cost Mini PCs
  • Has 2 USB 3.1. Looks like a terrible option.

  • Low Cost Mini PCs

Any mini PCs with 4+ usb3.2 or higher?

  • Traffic to be banned from London’s Oxford Street under Sadiq Khan plan
  • It's a difficult one, as you can't optimise for everyone. However if someone is really so disabled that they can't travel independently to the point that walking down a road is problematic then they are really going to struggle with Oxford St. today.

All the busses and taxis running down the middle of the road will prevent them from crossing to access all the other shops. They would probably be better off visiting one of the many other shopping areas rather than a tourist trap.

  • What are your red flags for job interviews?

I was looking at a potential new job until it occurred to me to ask about dealing with "on-call" support.

As I work in tech, there is usually an expectation that some level of support is handled off hours in case systems go down. However this position didn't have any compensation for making yourself available and generally only 15 mins from a phone or computer to support the systems. The best they could offer was "time in-lieu" if you get called, which is basically saying they'll let you work your contracted maximum hours despite it being unsociable hours.

    Fuck that.

After seeing elsewhere someone commenting that they would refuse to on-call if there was also a "return to office", because if they had to go to the office to work, then how could they possibly support it from home, it made me wonder what other things should I remember to enquire about when interviewing and asking the hiring company?

What sort of outside lights would you call this?

I'm replacing the light at my front door, and I dont seem to be able to find what I want.

My current light is solar powered, light and motion sensitive so it only comes on at night and dims when there is no movement. However during winter there isn't enough light during the day to charge it so that it lasts longer than a couple of hours.

I would like to replace it with a mains powered one, but keeping the only on at night, and dims when there is no movement so that it illuminates the house number. Everything I see appears to only have one or the other (unless they actually have both but the listing details are terrible), does anyone know the terminology I need to use?

Controls on buy-to-let landlords in Reading: views sought
www.readingchronicle.co.uk Consultation on controls on buy to let landlords in Reading closes soon

Views are being sought on controls on buy-to-let landlords in Reading to improve housing standards in rented accommodation.

Currently, landlords that have HMOs with four people or less occupying them do not need a licence.

Reading Borough Council wants to extend licensing to all HMOs across the borough for those with three to four occupants.

Ideas for dealing with home cleaning refillables?

We are currently in a silly situation when dealing with refillable products for home, and I was wondering if anyone else had any ideas.

If I wanted shower gel (for example), all the refillable locations require a bottle with the capacity printed on it, and for it to be empty. And basically I don't want to wait until my shower gel is out completely before getting any more, so I would want an intermediate container however I cannot find a 1l bottle that has the capacity embossed on it so that I can take it to the refill station, and bring it home. I really don't want to buy another small plastic bottle with the capacity on a paper label that does one refill of the gel, and would have to be replaced when the label comes off.

Is there any better example of a food that doesn't deserve to exist?

There are lots of things that can be put down to personal taste, however I can't let this abomination go.

I am referring to Branston Smooth.

I love Branston Pickle, but I can't get on board with Branston paste. Is there a better example where a manufacturer made an updated version of a food that was objectively worse?

    Plex for books?

I've picked up an eink Android tablet, which is awesome. However I have plenty of ebooks I've purchased over the years on places such as Humble, and I was wondering whether there was a self hosted solution like Plex/Emby/Jellyfin but designed for ebooks.

I've seen Calibre but it doesn't seem to be quite the same thing, and running a sync is a bit clunky for the spouse factor.

Is there anything that would index the books, show a bookshelf and allow me to read them, with offline support?

Preferably with an Android app for reading with, and the reader handling eink rather than scrolling.

West Berks tops schools suspension and expulsion tables

West Berkshire has the highest number of school exclusions in the county.

And it has more than twice the number of school suspensions in state-run and special schools under its control.

Government data says 1,263 suspensions were issued in West Berkshire in the 22.23 autumn term to 532 pupils.

That compares to 569 in Reading, 401 in Slough, 406 in Windsor and Maidenhead and 358 in Wokingham.

Does anyone else find the water companies to be unreasonable with their ghosting for 6 months, then nagging daily if you haven't paid them within a week?

Probably just me being a little grumpy after getting a phone call from Southern Water, but it feels a little unreasonable that I only get billed every 6 months (I can't make it more frequent), and they expect a random amount to be settled within the week.

I got a bill last week and I'm already recieving phone calls because I'm "late", even though it's only the first, since now it's payday I'll pay it but I'm not happy with the harassment.

    Things for teens in Manchester

We will be visiting Manchester this coming weekend, and was wondering if there any locals here that might be able to suggest anything that might be quirky and fun to go and see?

For context, I have 13 and 8 year old daughters to try and keep interested so I want to mix a couple of things to keep them interested in with the things I want to do. I think doing a run around some of the vintage stores and the Pankhurst Centre could be good but does anyone have any other suggestions?
