What is the point of Flatpak, AppImage, Snap, etc?

I don't understand what problem they are meant to solve. If you have a FOSS piece of software, you can install it via the package manager. Or the store, which is just a frontend for the package manager. I see that they are distribution-independent, but the distro maintainers likely already know what's compatible and what your system needs to install the software. You enjoy that benefit only through the package manager.

If your distro ships broken software because of dependency problems, you don't need a tool like Flatpak, you need a new distro.

A list of recent hostile moves by #Google's #Chrome team (Jeff Fortin T. (@nekohayo@mastodon.social))
  • I've been waiting for a sign to switch and I think this is it. A few questions though.

    • Does Firefox for Android have tab groups like Chrome for Android?
    • Is Firefox Pocket like Chrome's reading list? My first impression of Pocket was that it was a half-baked feature only really meant to serve ads.

  • 4th floor wasn't soundproofed? Even though sound travels through air very well, even to the 15th floor of some buildings. That's unfortunate. Soundproofing buildings is an area we really suck at. Especially residential.

  • The difference between Tokyo and Chicago trains is night and day

Taking the blue line out of O'Hare airport and we are immediately being yanked around in every direction. Whereas in Tokyo, the curvature of the track and maximum speed inputted by the driver were linked.

In Tokyo, whenever I saw a long row of cushioned seats I thought to myself we could never have this in Chicago. It wouldn't last one day before being barfed or pissed upon.

In Tokyo, Metro trains are equipped with multiple TV screens displaying the next station, number of minutes to arrival, and a diagram of optimal exits in relation to your current car number. In Chicago, we have two or three sheets of cardstock, that are occasionally not even lined up correctly. That's the map.

The worst part is, JR is privatized, and they still manage to provide this high quality of service. How??

  • According to the Japanese zodiac, people born in May 1994 would have the zodiac sign of the Snake.

Expect it's Dog, not Snake. Bing thinks it's Ox. How did the entire field of AI go from surprisingly accurate to utterly useless in the span of under a year? I have no idea what benefits you personally see in this site.

    Experiences installing on a Chromebook?

My Chromebook is now end of life so I turn to FOSS. I'm excited for the opportunity to shed the crummy Linux VM (crostini) as well. Anybody tried installing NixOS on a Chromebook? Is it possible, how much trouble did it give you?

[Help] use keyboard from another linux laptop

Typing on the steam deck, no matter what method I use, is very slow. I have a linux laptop, but I obviously can't plug in the keyboard into the steam deck.

I was considering running KDE connect, but it gets closed in game mode. Could I run some kind of service in the background during game mode? Like is there some kind of systemd target for that?
