Next Steps for a Beginner Plex Setup? Where to Upgrade First
  • Thanks. Have done some googling and just found out that subwoofers are extremely expensive in my country (New Zealand). E.g. subs that are $600 in the US are equivalent of $1,100 here. But then I see that DIY subs are a thing. Might look into that because I do have woodworking equipment, import the electronics and buy the MDF locally.

Didn't really consider HDR and brightness. Lots to think about.

  • Does the .1 really make a difference? I've been running 5.0 for a few years (Micca) and 1080p dumb TV from 2015 (I don't care for 4k) connected to a 2019 shield pro and my Unraid server. Been happy with the sound quality.

  • [QUESTION] Static IP vs Dynamic DNS?
  • Get a static ip if at all possible. The work arounds with a dynamic IP are simply not as good. Or if your ISP and router fully support IPv6 you could alternatively go down that route.

  • Is moving to IPv6 worth it?
  • Thank you that was really informative. I paid <$50 for my IP address in 2015. My ISP has been around since 1990 so I suppose they may have been one of the lucky companies. Not sure if they do RPKI, first I'm learning of it. Maybe they're cross subsidizing from other areas of the business. Their monthly fibre fee isn't the most competitive but the service is reliable and haven't had anything to complain about.

They are a little behind in speeds though. They only offer 900mbps asymmetrical max, while you can get 2, 4 and 8gbit in my area from other providers. I don't need that kind of speed so I'm happy for now.

  • Usenet block vs subscription accounts
  • But then don't you end up having to subscribe two or more different providers? Or is there a particular monthly provider that has incredible availability? I have block accounts with three different providers.

  • What are your most used selfhosted services?
  • Oh wow that catch all thing sounds like a really handy alternative to disposable emails. Thank you! I will also look into spam assassin. Logged into my VPS to remember what software I'm using - dovecot and postfix.

EDIT: installed and configured SpamAssassin. Thank you, that was easy!

  • Usenet block vs subscription accounts

Why do most people seem to go with subscription accounts? I've used block accounts for a few years and only have to buy more every 1-2 years. Is there some kind of benefit I'm missing?

    Coreboot importance?

How important is it to have something like coreboot for your firmware/BIOS on your router? I run pfsense on a mini PC router from aliexpress that has an Intel n100 cpu in it, so I guess the bios is intel as well. I self host a few things on an unraid machine, some apps are exposed to the internet through cloudflare tunnels.
